Guilford Announces Men's and Women's Basketball Schedules

Greensboro, N.C. (9/29/06) -- Guilford College men’s basketball coach Tom Palombo announced the schedule for the 2006-2007 season, which includes an exhibition game at Elon University, a trip to the Jimmy V Classic and a matchup with neighboring Greensboro College at the Greensboro Coliseum.

The Quakers open the season Nov. 4 with a scrimmage at Division I Elon, a regular Guilford rival when the teams were in the Carolinas Conference. The Phoenix, who reached the semifinals of the 2006 Southern Conference Tournament, finished 15-14 last season. Elon defeated the Quakers, 87-63, in a regular-season contest last year.

Guilford travels to Salem, Va., Nov. 18 and 19 for the Jimmy V Classic, hosted by Roanoke College. The Quakers match up against Robert Morris College (Springfield, Ill.) and the University of the South.

The Greensboro Coliseum hosts a heated rivalry between Guilford and Greensboro College Nov. 29. Last year’s match up resulted in the Quakers handing Greensboro its first loss of the season, 82-67. The Pride finished 12-13 overall and 7-5 in the USA South Conference a year ago.

Guilford returns four starters from last year’s 13-14 team. With a 10-8 record in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC), the Quakers received their highest seed (4th) in the ODAC Tournament since joining the league in 1991. Guilford reached the ODAC Tournament semifinals before falling to eventual NCAA Division III champion Virginia Wesleyan, 72-69.

Guilford College coach Stephanie Flamini announced the schedule for the 2006-2007 women’s basketball season Friday. The slate features the first Guilford College Tip-Off Tournament and a rare home game with neighboring Greensboro College. The schedule includes 13 home dates.

The Quakers open the season Nov. 18 and 19 in the Guilford College Tip-Off, which also showcases the talents of McMurry University, SUNY Oneonta and Bennett College. McMurry, which boasted a 26-3 record last season, won the 2006 American Southwest Conference Tournament title before losing to Hardin-Simmons University in the first round of the NCAA Division III Tournament.

Guilford plays Greensboro College in its Ragan-Brown Field House for the first time since January 1996. Last year’s match-up, held at the Greensboro Coliseum, ended in defeat for the Quakers as the Pride erased an 11-point halftime deficit in a 68-52 win. Greensboro had a record-breaking season. It finished 22-8, captured the USA South Conference title and reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

The Quakers get another shot at two-time defending Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) champion Randolph-Macon, which ended Guilford's season in last year’s ODAC Tournament semifinals. Randolph-Macon, which finished 28-3, made it to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament before falling to Hardin-Simmons, 72-56.

Guilford welcomes back four players from last year’s roster, including two starters. The Quakers added 10 first-year players who bring depth to the team. Last year’s squad finished 11-16 overall and 9-11 in the ODAC.
