GUILFORD STUDENT-ATHLETES RANKED AMONG NCAA SOCCER, FOOTBALL LEADERS
Greensboro, NC (1/10/06) -- Guilford
women's soccer student-athlete Jennah Carter and six members of the
football squad finished their respective seasons ranked among the NCAA Division
III leaders in a combined 11 categories.
Carter, a junior forward, finished the season ranked 23rd in points (2.45 per match) and 27th in goals (1.05 per match). Her 23 tallies set a new school record for single-season scoring.
Carter helped the Quakers to a record-setting year. Head coach Eric Lewis guided the team to a 13-6-3 record, 7-4 in the ODAC. The 13 wins broke the previous Guilford standard of 12, set in 2004. The Quakers reached the ODAC Tournament finals for the first time in the program's history, and expect 20 letter winners back in 2006.
On the gridiron, Guilford's redshirt-freshman quarterback Josh Vogelbach ranked fourth in the nation in total offense (363.8 yards per game) and 38th in passing efficiency (139.0). He was the top freshman in total offense and set Division III rookie marks for completions (280), passing yards (3,549), passing touchdowns (37) and total offense (3,638).
Junior wide receiver Chris Barnette ranked first in the country (all NCAA
divisions) with 101 receptions in 10 games. Wideouts Micah Rushing (7.8
receptions per game) and Joe Joyner (5.7 receptions per game) ranked
ninth and 64th, respectively, in the same category. Barnette stood second in the
country in receiving yards per game (136.9), while Rushing (93.0 receiving yards
per game) and Joyner (80.3 receiving yards per game) were 35th and 66th. Rushing
(148.1 all-purpose yards per game) and Barnette (135.9 all-purpose yards per
game) ranked 34th and 50th, respectively, among national all-purpose yard
leaders. Barnette (9.6 points per game) finished the season in 29th place in
scoring and Rushing ranked 46th in kickoff return average (23.7 yards per
return).
Punter Travis Frazier ranked 45th in punting average
(37.8 yards per punt) and cornerback Devon White was 20th in
interceptions (0.6 interceptions per game).
First-year head coach Kevin Kiesel's Quakers matched the school record with four ODAC wins and finished the year on a four-game winning streak. Picked sixth in the preseason coaches' poll, Guilford shared second place in the league with a 4-2 record.
