GUILFORD'S BOONE, POPLIN GLEAN WEEKLY ATHLETIC HONORS
Greensboro, NC (4/4/06) -- Joseph Poplin won the Old Dominion Athletic Conference's (ODAC) Golfer of the Week and the Guilford College Student-Athlete of the Week awards Tuesday. The student-athlete award is presented by Guilford's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and includes competition from March 27-April 2. The Quakers' Chad Boone landed the ODAC's Offensive Baseball Player of the Week honor Monday, which makes him Guilford's third winner of the league's weekly baseball honor.
Poplin,
a 6-0, 150-pound junior, led Guilford to a fourth-place finish at the 32-team
Marine Federal Credit Union Intercollegiate March 31-April 2 in Camp Lejeune,
NC. He placed fifth in the 150-student-athlete field with a three-day 213
(66-72-75), the fourth-lowest 54-hole score in Guilford history. Poplin
tied Guilford's school record with a four-under-par 66 on the Paradise Point
Golf Club's Scarlet Course in Friday's opening round. His two-day 138 (66-72) at
the tourney stands second in Guilford history for 36 holes.
Poplin leads coach Jack Jensen's Quakers with a 75.06 stroke average in 18 rounds and has four top-10 finishes in eight events. Guilford, the top-ranked team in the most recent Golf Coaches Association of America/Bridgestone Division III poll, plays in the Emory Spring Invitational April 10-11 in Atanta, GA.
Boone, a 6-1, 185-pound junior outfielder, extended his hitting streak to
eight games and hit .636 for the second week in a row, which helped Guilford to
a 2-1 week. He had seven hits in 11 at-bats, including his second homer of the
year, plus a team-leading seven runs batted in (RBI). The switch-hitting right
fielder went 2-3 with a triple and three RBIs in Guilford's 11-6 win over
Southern Virginia March 28. Boone helped the Quakers split an April 1
doubleheader with ODAC-rival Hampden-Sydney with five hits in eight at-bats. He
was 2-3 with an RBI in the opener and 3-5 with three RBIs in the nightcap. His
two-run homer in game two helped Guilford overcome a 12-2 deficit in the
Quakers' 14-13 win.
Boone's hot hitting has raised his average to .348, which ranks sixth among Guilford's regulars. He ranks third on the team with 21 RBIs and is second with 22 runs scored and four stolen bases. Over the last eight games he is batting .636 with two homers and 13 RBIs. He leads the Quakers with a .500 batting average and 10 RBIs in 10 ODAC games.
Coach Nick Black's Quakers (17-10, 5-5 ODAC) visit league-rival Roanoke Wednesday, April 5 at 7:00 p.m. in an ODAC tilt. Guilford plays Greensboro April 6 in a nonconference game at 3:00 p.m. in War Memorial Stadium.
Guilford's SAAC is comprised of representatives from each of the school's 16
varsity teams. The group meets regularly to discuss the state of Guilford
Athletics and build community among student-athletes and non-student-athletes on
the campus. Other recent Guilford SAAC activities include a canned-food drive to
benefit local charities, leading student cheering sections at home contests and
dodgeball competitions among representatives from Guilford's administration and
athletic teams.
