General Release - Clark and Whigham Win ODAC Player of the Week Awards - Guilford College

  • GUILFORD'S CLARK AND WHIGHAM WIN WEEKLY HONORS

Greensboro, NC (3/6/06) -- Guilford College's Dave Whigham won the Old Dominion Athletic Conference's (ODAC) Baseball Pitcher of the Week Award and Colin Clark captured the ODAC's Golfer of the Week Award Monday. Whigham also received Guilford's Student-Athlete of the Week Award, presented by Guilford's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC).

Whigham, a 6-1, 170-pound right-hander, struck out a career-high 13 batters in Guilford's 6-2 ODAC win over Lynchburg March 4. The junior fanned seven of the first 11 batters he faced and scattered three hits over eight innings for his team-leading third victory of the season. Whigham allowed two unearned runs and walked two in his second straight outing with 10 or more strikeouts. He leads Guilford with 1.85 earned run average and 36 strikeouts in 24.1 innings. Opponents are hitting .219 against him.

Whigham's solid pitching has helped coach Nick Black's Quakers to an 8-3 overall record (1-1 ODAC), which matches the program's best start since 1997. Guilford has won five of its last six games and eight of its last 10. The Quakers visit Averett Wednesday (3/8) in a nonconference game at 2:00 p.m. before resuming league play Saturday (3/11) against visiting Randolph-Macon in a noon doubleheader.

Guilford's SAAC is comprised of representatives from each of the school's 16 varsity teams. The group meets regularly to discuss the state of Guilford Athletics and seeks to build community among student-athletes and non-student-athletes on the campus. Other recent Guilford SAAC activities include a canned-food drive to benefit local charities and dodgeball competitions among representatives from Guilford's teams.

Clark, a four-time ODAC Golfer of the Week in his career, placed ninth among over 100 competitors at the Pfeiffer/Pine Needles Invitational Feb. 27-28 in Southern Pines, NC. The junior's two-round 149 (78-71) helped Guilford place sixth among 18 teams with a team score of 612. The Quakers had the second-best showing by a Division III team, trailing only tourney champion Methodist. Guilford is ranked first in the current Golf Coaches Association of America/Bridgestone NCAA Division III Coaches' Poll.

Through 11 rounds, Clark has a 76.82 stroke average, the team's second-lowest figure. The defending Division III national champion, Clark has three top-10 finishes in 2005-06.

Coach Jack Jensen's Quakers resume competition March 17-19 at the Hall of Fame Invitational in Humble, TX. The event features the defending NCAA Division I, Division II and Division III national champions, plus several top-ranked Division I squads.
