DREW, HUTCHINS WIN WEEKLY ODAC HONORS
Greensboro, NC (3/1/06) -- Guilford College's Phil Drew won the Old Dominion Athletic Conference's (ODAC) Baseball Hitter of the Week Award and Mary Hutchins captured the ODAC's Women's Lacrosse Player of the Week Award. The ODAC released its first weekly awards of the spring Tuesday afternoon.
Drew,
a redshirt-sophomore outfielder and catcher, hit a team-best .438 through the
Quakers' first eight games of 2006. He also leads the team with 14 hits, five
doubles and 12 RBI. Drew has hit safely in each of Guilford's first eight games,
extending his career-long hitting streak to 12 games dating back to last season.
Drew was had three doubles and three RBI, including a game-winning double, in
Guilford's come-from-behind 13-8 win over NCAA Division II Bluefield State Feb.
25. He had a triple and a homer among his three hits in the Quakers' 11-3
victory over Montreat Feb. 16. Drew's three-run double in the seventh inning
tied the game and helped Guilford overcome an 8-1 seventh-inning deficit to beat
Averett, 10-8, Feb. 15.
Drew's hot bat has helped coach Nick Black's Quakers to their best start since 1997. Guilford puts a three-game winning streak and a 6-2 record on the line Wednesday afternoon against visiting Greensboro and opens ODAC play Saturday (3/4) at home against Lynchburg
Hutchins, who also won Guilford's Student-Athlete of the Week prize this
week, matched her career high with six goals in Guilford's 13-10 victory at
Greensboro College Feb. 25. Her goal in the final seconds of the first half
broke a 7-7 tie and gave the Quakers the lead for good. It also triggered a 5-0
Guilford run that opened a 12-7 advantage and essentially put the game away.
Hutchins, a sophomore midfielder and attacker, unleashed seven shots on
goal, picked up two ground balls and caused a turnover in the win.
Coach Matthew Grosso's Quakers open their Old Dominion Athletic Conference and home schedules Wednesday (3/1) against visiting Hollins at 4:30 p.m. in Guilford's Armfield Athletic Center. The Quakers visit league-rival Lynchburg Friday (3/3) at 4:00 p.m.
