General Release - 2005-06 Guilford Hires New Assistant Coaches - Guilford College

GUILFORD ADDS TWO TO ATHLETICS DEPARTMENT STAFF

 

      Greensboro, NC (8/8/05) -- Mark Hargis joined Guilford College's athletics department as an assistant football coach and Trevor Hewitt was named an assistant volleyball coach for the Quakers Monday. Guilford Director of Athletics Marion Kirby announced the additions to his staff three days before student-athletes return to campus for the 2005-06 school year.

 

Hargis (right) will work with the wide receivers for first-year head coach Kevin Kiesel's staff. The St. Paul, MN, native returns to North America after spending six months as the offensive coordinator and associate head coach for the Elancourt Templiers of the French Premier League. The Paris-based squad placed second in the 2005 European Federation of American Football Euro Cup Tournament and sent three offensive players to the French national team.

 

      Hargis spent the 2004 season as the defensive line coach for Ellsworth (IA) Community College's Graphic Edge Bowl champions. As a graduate assistant at Wisconsin-Eau Claire from 2003-04, Hargis coached the cornerbacks and receivers in addition to his duties as the Blugolds' junior varsity head coach. He earned a master's of education degree in professional development from Eau Claire in 2004.

 

      A four-year football letter winner at Gustavus Adolphus, Hargis made 27 career receptions in 17 appearances as a wide receiver. After earning a bachelor's degree in business management in 2001, he enrolled in the Valparaiso University School of Law and aided the football team as a volunteer secondary coach for two seasons.

 

Hewitt (left) joins third-year head coach Glenda Dellinger's volleyball staff after a successful stint at McKean (DE) High School where he coached both the boys' and girls' volleyball teams. The girls' squad compiled a 27-13 record in 2003 and 2004 and reached the state playoffs in 2003. Under his tutelage both the boys' and girls' teams received the American Volleyball Coaches Association Team Academic Award in 2003-04 and 2004-05. Hewitt also made scholastic coaching stops at Glasgow, Salesianum and John Dickinson in Delaware.

 

      In addition to his high school experience, Hewitt has coached numerous camps, clinics and all-star games. He worked extensively with the Brandywine (DE) Volleyball Club from 2001-05 and completed the Coaches Accreditation Program (CAP) I certification from the United States Volleyball Association in 2004.

 

      The 2001 University of Delaware graduate earned his bachelor's degree in history education and minored in political science.
