  • GUILFORD'S JENNIFER KING AND BEN STRONG EARN REGIONAL HOOPS HONORS

Greensboro, NC (3/15/06) -- Guilford College's Jennifer King and Ben Strong received D3hoops.com All-South Region honors late Tuesday. King, a senior, earned second-team recognition. Strong, a sophomore, was a third-team All-South pick.

Division III sports information directors from around the country nominated 599 student-athletes for the regional honors. The sports information directors voted for 10 student-athletes from their region, six forwards/centers and four guards. The top vote-getters at each position earned all-region recognition.

"We are thankful to the sports information directors across Division III who took the time to nominate and vote to provide broader recognition to these worthy student-athletes," said D3hoops.com publisher Pat Coleman. "Their continued help and participation is integral to the all-region teams and everything else we do."

King, a First Team All-ODAC guard, enjoyed one of the finest campaigns in school history. She ranks seventh in NCAA Division III and second in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) with 22.0 points per game, the third-best figure in Guilford history. Her 594 points stand second on the Quakers' season scoring list. King ranks eighth in the league rebounding (7.1 rpg.), 12th in assists (3.15 apg.), seventh in free-throw percentage (.798) and ninth in steals (2.07 spg.). She scored at least 20 points 19 times, led the Quakers' scorers in 22 games and had four double-doubles. King captained coach Stephanie Flamini's team to an 11-16 record (9-11 ODAC) and a berth in the ODAC Tournament semifinals.

King finished her career as Guilford's third all-time leading scorer with 1,601 points in 106 games. The Quakers' career leader in three-pointers (166) and three-point attempts (544), she is Guilford's third women's basketball student-athlete to compile 1,500 points and 500 rebounds in her career. King also ranks among Guilford's all-time leaders in free throws (2nd), free-throw percentage (4th), steals (4th), assists (5th) and rebounds (10th). The two-time All-ODAC basketball selection recently joined the Quakers' softball team for her fourth and final diamond campaign.

Strong, a 6-10, 220-pound center, registered one of the best men's basketball seasons in Guilford's NCAA Division III history to become the school's initial First Team All-ODAC honoree in men's basketball. He leads the ODAC and ranks 70th nationally with his 18.9 points per game scoring average. Strong also tops the league and stands 34th in Division III with 1.9 blocks per game. He scored 509 points in 27 games, the most since Guilford joined Division III in 1991. His 52 blocks rank fourth in school history, first in the Division III era. Strong also set Guilford's Division III season records for scoring average, field goals (195), free throws (119) and blocks average. He stands sixth in the league with 6.6 rebounds per game and fourth in field-goal percentage (.560). Guilford's top scorer in 18 games, he totaled a team- and career-high five double-doubles this year. Strong hit for a career-high 30 points in the Quakers' 109-106 victory over Emory & Henry Jan. 18 and had 10 20-point games.

Strong's play helped coach Tom Palombo's Quakers to a 13-14 overall record (10-8) and their highest ODAC Tournament seed (4th) since joining the league in 1991. The Quakers reached the tournament semifinals before falling to eventual champion Virginia Wesleyan, 72-69. The Marlins play in the NCAA Division III Final Four this weekend in Salem, VA.
