Greensboro, NC (11/23/04) -- Guilford College freshman Kerry Atkinson's
one-handed runner with five seconds left lifted the Quakers' men's basketball
team to a 64-60 win over Greensboro College Tuesday night. The win salvaged a
split of the annual cross-town basketball double-header between the neighboring
schools hosted by the Greensboro Coliseum. The Pride's women posted a commanding
60-37 victory over Guilford in the opening game for their first win over the
Quakers since 1998.
The exciting men's contest featured 10 ties and 10 lead changes before Atkinson's bucket put the Quakers ahead for good. Following a Greensboro time-out, Atkinson fouled the Pride's Truman Newman in the backcourt, which sent the senior to the line for two potentially game-tying free throws. Newman missed both shots, Guilford's Genaro Lawhorn corralled his game-high 10th rebound of the game, was fouled by Newman and iced the win with two free throws. The junior center led all scorers with a career-high 26 points on 12-of-17 shooting from the floor.
The lead changed for the eighth and final time in the second half on Sean
Newton's three-pointer with 1:07 left that gave the Pride a 60-58 edge.
Lawhorn tied the game 11 seconds later with a strong basket in the paint,
but missed a free throw that would have given Guilford the lead. Following a
Newman turnover, Guilford called two time outs before inserting Atkinson
into the lineup with 16 seconds left and setting up his winning drive to the
basket.
Newton led Greensboro with 13 points off the bench, despite 3-of-12 shooting from the floor. Senior Eddie Montrell added 10 points, seven boards and two blocks for the Pride. Senior Rodney Blackstock finished with eight points and 10 boards on a 3-of-17 shooting night from the floor.
Guilford junior Kevin Smith scored 10 points and grabbed eight boards before fouling out. Atkinson, a late addition to the roster making his varsity debut, finished with six points and three rebounds in six second-half minutes.
In the night's first game, Greensboro sophomore transfer Kim Enoch continued her torrid start to the season with 21 points and nine rebounds in the Pride's women's victory. Enoch is averaging 20.6 points and 16 boards in her first three games with the Pride. She had 10 points in the opening half to help Greensboro grab a 30-10 lead at the break.
Guilford made only 3-of-28 shots from the floor in the opening period and trailed by as many as 25 before whittling the deficit down to 14 with a 13-2 run midway through the second half. The Pride stopped the spurt with a 15-1 run of its own over the next six minutes.
Sophomore Staci Humphrey added 11 points, seven boards and a game-high seven assists for Greensboro. Guilford's Dionne Graham scored a team-high 14 points and the Quakers' Courtney Hill had seven points and a game-high 13 rebounds. Guilford managed only 20.8 shooting from the floor and scored its fewest points in a game since a 52-36 setback at Emory & Henry January 30, 1993.
