GUILFORD'S BOONE, POPLIN WIN WEEKLY ODAC AWARDS
Greensboro, NC (4/4/05) -- Guilford College's Chad Boone and Joseph Poplin received the Old Dominion Athletic Conference's (ODAC) Baseball Hitter of the Week and Golfer of the Week awards, respectively. The league office announced its award winners for the week ending April 3 Monday afternoon.
Boone,
a sophomore, hit .588 with two homers and nine runs batted in (RBI) in
Guilford's 3-0 week. He went four-for-seven with a double and four RBI in the
Quakers' 13-9 win at Ferrum Mar. 30. Boone's two-run double highlighted
Guilford's four-run 10th inning that gave the guests the win. The switch hitter
went six-for-10 in the Quakers' doubleheader sweep of league rival Eastern
Mennonite Apr. 2. He had a career-high five hits in the nightcap, including two
home runs and a double, plus four RBI. Boone has raised his batting
average 89 points in the last seven games and starts the week ranked sixth on
the team with a .339 batting average. His five homers and 30 RBI stand second on
Coach Gene Baker's club. The Quakers have won four straight games and
start the week with a 17-11 overall record (6-4 ODAC). Guilford hosts
league-rival Roanoke Wednesday (4/6) at 3:30 p.m.
Poplin, also a sophomore, shot an even-par 142 and placed sixth among 151
competitors at the 34th Marine Federal Credit Union Intercollegiate Tournament
Apr. 1-3 in Camp Lejeune, NC. Poplin's play helped the Quakers finish
fourth in the 31-team field. Poplin shot a two-under 70 in Friday's
opening session on the Paradise Point Gold Course. After Saturday's round was
washed out, Poplin carded a windy 72 Sunday on the par-70 Scarlet Course.
Poplin has had the best finish in three of Guilford's eight tournaments
and ranks fourth on the team with a 75.73 stroke average in 15 rounds. Coach
Jack Jensen's Quakers are ranked second in the current GCAA/Bridgestone NCAA
Division III Coaches' Poll. Guilford returns to the links Apr. 11-12 at the
Emory Spring Invitational in Atlanta.
