Greensboro, NC (4/25/05) -- Junior Jennifer King took home Guilford College's Best Undergraduate Female Athlete and the Quaker Club Ideal Female Student-Athlete Awards at a banquet Sunday evening to honor the school's student-athletes. She also received the women's basketball team's Coaches' Award.
A two-sport standout, King earned Second Team All-Old Dominion Athletic
Conference (ODAC) basketball honors and the Nereus C. English '26 Athletic
Leadership Award, Guilford's highest athletic honor, in 2004-05. On the
hardwood, she led the Quakers in scoring (15.0 ppg), free-throw percentage
(.757) and three-point field goals, and ranked second in assists (84) and steals
(51). Among ODAC leaders, King was third in scoring, second in three-point field
goals and seventh in free-throw percentage. She also has started with the
Quakers' softball team in each of her three years. She hit .211 and ranked
fourth on the squad in stolen bases (4) and doubles (7) in 2005. King is also an
accomplished student, as seen in her five appearances on Guilford's
Student-Athlete Honor Roll.
Golfer Dave Patterson received the Best Senior Male Athlete Award. Before
sitting out last season, he won the Best Undergraduate Male Athlete Award, the
English Award and All-America honorable mention honors in 2003. Patterson has
enjoyed a decorated college career, highlighted by his second-place finish at
the 2002 NCAA Tournament, which helped the Quakers win the national title. He
placed 10th at the 2001 NCAA Tournament, where Guilford took second. This
season, Patterson has the Quakers' fourth-lowest stroke average (76.29) and
earned First Team All-ODAC honors for the third time. He has finished in the
top-10 at five tournaments, including the 2005 ODAC Championship, where he
shared eighth place.
King's basketball teammate, Courtney Hill, won the Best Senior Female
Athlete Award. She concluded her career ranked among Guilford's all-time leaders
in nine statistical categories, including field-goal percentage (4th, .518), and
rebounds (7th, 635). A 5-8 forward, Hill was the 2002 ODAC Rookie of the Year
and a Second Team All-ODAC pick in 2004. This season, she led the team in
rebounds (8.2 rpg.), ranked second in scoring (14.2 ppg), blocked shots (14),
and stood third in steals (50). Among ODAC leaders, Hill was fifth in scoring,
sixth in rebounds and seventh in field-goal percentage. She was a 2004-05 First
Team All-ODAC pick, a D3hoops.com Third Team All-Region NCAA Division III
selection and a member of the North Carolina Collegiate Sports Information
Association College Division Second Team All-State Team. Hill also received the
basketball team's Most Valuable Player Award.
Patterson's teammate, sophomore Colin Clark, shared the Best Male
Undergraduate prize with baseball standout Rob Bittner. Clark leads the ODAC in
stroke average (74.57) and has four second-place finishes this spring. The
league's coaches selected him as the ODAC's Golfer of the Year for the second
consecutive season and he twice received the ODAC Golfer of the Week Award. He
was a recipient of the 2004-05 English Award in February. Clark finished in a
tie for second place at the 2005 ODAC Championship, his third consecutive
second-place finish. He also won the golf team's Most Valuable Player Award.
Bittner, a junior first baseman, leads the Quakers in batting average
(.406), hits (58), doubles (13), home runs (9), RBI (42), slugging percentage
(.685) and on-base percentage (.494) through games of April 25. He paced the
ODAC in home runs and ranks second in slugging percentage, second in RBI and
fourth in batting average. Bittner entered the Quakers' final two games with 18
career homers, the eighth-best total in school history.
The George Wynne Most Improved Athlete Award went to Bittner's teammate, sophomore Brian Burton. He went from a little-used pinch-hitter in 2004 to an everyday designated hitter this season. He raised his batting average from .242 in 2004 to .362 as of April 25. Burton improved his power and timely hitting as well, going from no home runs and two RBI in 2004 to three home runs and 33 RBI in 2005.
Women's tennis player Songan Nguyen claimed the
Richard Joyce Sportsmanship and the team's Most Valuable Player Awards. She
finished the season with an 18-5 record at #3 singles, the most singles wins by
a Quakers' student-athlete since 1997. Nguyen finished fourth at the ODAC
Tournament and received All-Tournament honors.
Senior soccer standout Brett Ralls, another 2004-05 English Award
recipient, earned the Quaker Club's Ideal Male Student-Athlete and the men's
soccer Most Valuable Player Awards. The two-time Second Team Academic
All-District III honoree captained the men's soccer team the last four seasons.
In 2004, he won the ODAC Men's Soccer Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award and was
an All-ODAC honorable mention selection for the second time in his career. Ralls
compiled five goals, eight assists and 18 points in 63 career matches. The
dean's list student graduated in December with a degree in business management
and accounting.
