GUILFORD ADDS TWO HOOPS COACHES TO ATHLETICS STAFF
Greensboro, NC (10/01/03) -- Guilford College Athletic Director Marion Kirby announced the appointment of two new assistant basketball coaches to the Quakers' staff Wednesday. Tim Kaine comes to Guilford as an assistant men's basketball coach while Scott Smith will be a new assistant women's basketball coach.
Kaine, who will assist first-year head men's basketball coach Tom Palombo, graduated with a bachelor's degree in sport management from Winthrop in August, 2002. He earned a master's degree in sports administration specialization from Austin Peay State last July. While there, the West Point, NY, native served as a graduate assistant coach with the men's basketball team. Kaine played varsity basketball for a year at Tennessee-Martin before transferring to Winthrop. He lettered four years with the soccer team at Winthrop and performed marketing duties for the athletic department. The godson of Duke men's basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski, Kaine completed an internship in Duke's men's basketball office and has also coached summer camps for three seasons. He grew up in Oak Ridge, TN, and starred on the Oak Ridge High School soccer and basketball teams. Kaine earned Tennessee's 1997 High School Boys' Soccer Player of the Year Award and scholastic All-America recognition.
Smith, who will assist first-year women's coach Stephanie Flamini, graduated from Indiana with a master's degree in sports management and athletic administration in 1997. He received his bachelor's degree in comprehensive social studies with a history concentration from Shippensburg in 1995. Smith served as the head girls' basketball coach at Holy Cross High School in Louisville, KY, from 2001-03 and guided the team to a 44-20 record and two Class A 6th region titles. He also coached the girls' basketball team at Northview (IN) High School and worked as an assistant at Edgewood (IN) High School and Chambersburg Area (PA) Senior High School. Chambersburg qualified for the 1995 Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association 4-A Tournament. Smith worked as a student assistant coach for the women's basketball team at Shippensburg from 1990-94.
Guilford's men's basketball team opens the season against 2002 NCAA Division III champion Catholic at a tournament hosted by Franklin & Marshall November 21. The Quakers' women open the same day versus Ohio Wesleyan in a tournament hosted by Marymount.
