GUILFORD BASKETBALL PLAYERS EARN ACADEMIC
HONORS
Greensboro, NC (02/19/04) -- Guilford's A.J. Robertson (Eden, NC/ Morehead) earned a spot on the 2003-04 First Team Academic All-District III women's basketball squad as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Thursday. The Quakers' Thomas Swindell (High Point, NC/Southwest Guilford) received Second Team Academic All-District III men's basketball honors. Robertson, a two-time academic all-district pick, is now eligible for the Academic All-America basketball team, which will be announced March 4.
The district team is comprised of women's basketball players from Division II, Division III and NAIA institutions in the five-state area from Virginia to Florida. Nominees were starters or important reserves of sophomore academic standing or above who maintained at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average.
Robertson,
a 5-10 senior guard, leads Guilford in scoring (11.3 ppg.) and three-point field
goals (50). She won the Old Dominion Athletic Conference's (ODAC) Women's
Basketball Player of the Week Award for the week of Feb. 9 after averaging 18.5
points and 5.0 rebounds in the Quakers' consecutive victories over
league-leading Eastern Mennonite and Bridgewater. She set Guilford standards for
three-point field goals in a season (50) and career (116) this year and also
holds the school marks for three-point attempts in a season (127) and career
(339). Robertson ranks 18th in the league in scoring, fourth in
three-point field goal percentage (.394) and second in three-point field goals
per game (2.27). Her three-point field goal percentage placed 39th among NCAA
Division III players through games of February 15. Coach Stephanie Flamini's
Quakers have a 15-8 overall record (13-6 ODAC) and the fourth seed in next
week's ODAC Tournament in Salem, VA.
Also a standout volleyball player, Robertson carries a 3.94 grade point average with a triple major in biology, chemistry and health sciences. She was a Second Team All-ODAC basketball player in 2002-03 and received Guilford's 2002-03 Nereus English Athletic Leadership Award, the school's highest athletic honor. Robertson has made the dean's list every semester and received the school's Milner Academic Excellence Award and a Dana Scholarship for academic performance, leadership and character.
Swindell
becomes Guilford's first Academic All-District honoree in the school's
Division III history. The 6-4, 230-pound senior forward ranks third on the team
with 11.0 points and 5.1 rebounds per game. His .545 field-goal percentage
stands second on the club and 10th in the conference. Swindell returned
to the lineup after spending his junior year studying in Spain. A team captain
and 25-game starter, he has 15 games with at least 10 points, including a
14-point, 11-rebound performance in the Quakers' Jan. 14 win over Roanoke. Coach
Tom Palombo's Quakers have a 15-10 overall mark and a school-record 11
ODAC wins headed into Saturday's ODAC Tournament quarterfinal game with Virginia
Wesleyan.
Swindell carries a 3.42 grade point average as a Spanish and accounting double major. He serves as the vice president of Guilford's Blacks Unifying Society club and is a member of the Latino Club. Swindell has also worked as a computer help desk worker, peer mentor and resident advisor at Guilford. He is a three-time member of Guilford's Student-Athlete Honor Roll.
