GUILFORD RECOGNIZES TOP STUDENT-ATHLETES WITH
ENGLISH AWARD

Greensboro, NC (04/30/03) -- Brad Franklin (Greensboro, NC/Southern Guilford) and Jennifer Pue-Gilchrist (Topsail Beach, NC/Leesville Road) received Guilford's Best Senior Athlete Awards at an April 30 banquet in the school's Founders Hall cafeteria. Franklin is Guilford's first three-time All-Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) baseball player. Pue-Gilchrist received the ODAC's 2002 Volleyball Player of the Year Award and set numerous school records.
Franklin
earned the Best Senior Male Athlete Award after receiving All-ODAC
recognition for the third year in a row in 2003, the second time as a
second-team pick. He helped Guilford to a 62-52 record and two ODAC Tournament
berths. Franklin received Guilford's 2003 Nereus C. English Athletic Leadership
Award and leaves with a .361 career batting average, the third-best figure in
school history. He also ranks among the school's career leaders in runs batted
in (4th, 117), hits (8th, 152) and slugging percentage (4th, .591).
Another
English Award honoree, Pue-Gilchrist (right) also received
the Quaker Club's Ideal Female Student-Athlete Award and the volleyball team's
Coaches' Award at the banquet. An outside hitter and three-year captain, she is
Guilford's second ODAC Volleyball Player of the Year and third three-time
All-ODAC selection. Pue-Gilchrist set the league's career digs record, which is
one of her 10 school standards. Also an accomplished student, she is a dean's
list double major in biology and health sciences.
Senior
baseball player Andrew Duffy (Trumbull, CT/Trumbull) captured a pair of
top honors, the George Wynne Most Improved Athlete Award and the Richard Joyce
Sportsmanship prize. The third baseman received honorable mention All-South and
first team All-ODAC honors after completing his finest baseball season. Duffy
ranked third on the team with a career-best .356 average. He hit a personal-best
five homers and placed third in the ODAC with 44 runs scored.
Junior
A.J. Robertson (Eden, NC/Morehead) received the Best Undergraduate Female
Athlete Award, plus the volleyball team's Team Before Self Award. A second-team
All-ODAC basketball performer, she won the basketball squad's Most Improved
Player and Coaches' Awards. Also an English Award recipient, Robertson led the
basketball team in scoring with a career-high 12.3 points per game. A dean's
list triple major in biology, chemistry and health sciences, she earned
first-team Verizon Academic All-District III basketball honors and second team
Verizon Academic All-District III volleyball laurels.
Juniors
Dave Patterson (Fort Pierce, FL/Fort Pierce Central) (left) and
Tim Imafidon (Raleigh, NC/Wake Forest-Rolesville) shared the Best
Undergraduate Male Athlete Award. Patterson, an honorable mention All-American
golfer in 2003, captured the ODAC's Golfer of the Year Award and posted the
second-lowest stroke average (73.13) in school history. He also received the
golf team's Most Valuable Player Award and like Imafidon, Guilford's 2003
English Award.
Imafidon
(right) earned first-team National Soccer Coaches Association of America
(NSCAA)/adidas All-South honors in 2002 to become the school's first Division
III two-time all-region selection. The team's most valuable player, he led
Guilford's scorers for the second year in a row and enters his final campaign
ranked second in school history with 67 career points.
Redshirt-sophomore
Josh Smith (Goldsboro, NC/Rosewood) (left) won the Quaker
Club's Ideal Male Student-Athlete Award. Smith is Guilford's starting
quarterback on the football team. He also assisted Guilford's softball team and
is a dean's list education and math double major.
Freshman
Brian Slate (Thomasville, NC/Wesleyan Academy) (right) received
the McBane Hitting Award, which is given annually to the leading hitter on
Guilford's baseball team. The ODAC Rookie of the Year, Slate earned first team
American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA)/Rawlings All-South region honors
after hitting .420, the third-highest average in school history.

Best Defensive Player: Clarence Martin (Reidsville, NC/Reidsville).
Best Offensive Player: Jevon Clarke (Apex, NC/Southeast Raleigh).
Women's Basketball
Best Team Player: Nicole McCrory (Charlotte, NC/East Mecklenburg).
Coaches' Award: Dara Burke (Richmond, VA/St. Catherine's).
Football
Most Valuable Defensive Player: Wes Kidd (Southport, NC/South Brunswick).
Most Valuable Offensive Player: Brandon Lockhart (Roxboro, NC/Person).
Golden Helmet Award (given to the player(s) who best exemplifies Guilford football on and off the field): O.J. Batts (Wallace, NC/Wallace-Rose Hill), J.J. Edwards (Mims, FL/Astronaut).
Men's Lacrosse
Most Valuable Player: Aaron Skiles (Weirton, WV/Shattuck-St. Mary's (MN)).
Most Improved Player: Kyle Brebner (Woodridge, VA/Gar-Field).
Women's Lacrosse
Most Valuable Offensive Player: Sarah Routhier (North Yarmouth, ME/Greely).
Most Valuable Defensive Players: Jenn Cahill (Maple Shade, NJ/Maple Shade), Lindsey Kennedy (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool).
