Quaker Club funds purchase new dugouts for Haworth Softball Field
In spring of 2008 the Guilford College Softball Team, received a major upgrade to its facilities with the addition of team dugouts to Haworth Softball Field. The Quaker Club provided the funds for the construction of new dugouts. The 2008 team under second year head coach Dennis Shores broke the school records for wins, finishing with a record of 20-19-1. The continued support of the Quaker Club has made a tremendous difference in Guilford College's facilities and the continued positive experiences and successes of the Quakers' student-athletes and their teams.

The Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) announced that over 900 participants have committed to the 2008 "Think Pink" initiative, which officially began on February 8. Guilford College partnered with a local charity called Friends For An Earlier Breast Cancer Test.
Supporters wore "Think Pink" t-shirts and created a human ribbon at halftime of the women's basketball home game versus Roanoke College. The "Think Pink" initiative is a global, unified effort for the WBCA's nation of coaches to assist in raising breast cancer awareness on the court, across campuses, in communities and beyond. The week set aside for this year's initiative is February 8 - 17. |

Quaker Men Play Division I South Carolina in Exhibition Basketball Game
Despite the loss to the South Carolina Gamecocks, the Guilford College men's basketball team still enjoyed their trip to the Colonial Center on Monday, November 5th for the exhibition match. South Carolina, led by Guilford Alum Dave Odom '65 , welcomed the Quakers to their court and gave them the all-star treatment, including a SEC grand entrance complete with spotlight introductions. Odom gave the Guilford fans a private suite and spoke on his experiences at Guilford. In return, Randy Doss '82 the Vice President for Enrollment and Campus Life, presented Odom with a Guilford College sweatshirt.

After the game, Odom remarked, "It was a good night for us. I appreciate the crowd that came. I appreciate Guilford College sharing the night with us. It was a real thrill for me to have Guilford in, and a real thrill for me to see them play well." He also commented on senior Ben Strong, who shared game-high scoring honors with 27 points and led all rebounders with 15, saying Strong"is an excellent player. He has a great touch and a great feel for the game. He will be a handful in [the Old Dominion Athletic Conference]. He was a handful tonight and more." Thank you to the Quaker Club members who attended, including Groom and Craig Fulton, Tom Whiteley, Earl Clinton, and faculty/staff Quaker Club members Max Carter, Brooks Haworth, and Randy Doss.
Guilford Fans Support Quakers on the Road
Guilford College secured another win in their November 3rd game at over Catholic University, and Guilford fans were there to cheer them on. Alumna Jayne Mardock organized a group to attend the game and tailgate before kickoff. Leslie Funk '91 wrote, "I had some alumni friends (who arrived late) and heard the crowd cheering for Guilford from the parking lot -- we were all so loud." The Guilford supporters included DC alumni group members, other alumni, and parents who live in the area and have sons who play on the team. Overall, there were approximately 50 Guilford fans, reported Leslie, "cheering in the stands and wearing burgundy!" She also remarked that it was "a nice show of support for the Guilford football team while they are playing on the road" and encouraged other alumni area groups to consider organizing similar support for Guilford teams on the road.
2007 Harvey Ljung and Quaker Club Golf Tournament a Success Despite the Rain
On Friday, October 26th, the Quaker Club hosted a golf tournament in conjunction with Homecoming for alumni. Unfortunately, the greens at Greensboro National Golf Course were closed due to heavy rains; however, over 65 golfers still came and enjoyed a buffet lunch, over 60 door prizes, gift bags, and three raffles.

Many golfers generously opted to donate their green fees to the Quaker Club instead of receiving a rain check; that money will also help the Quaker Club grow.
Tom Martin, class of 1968, won the Mizuno MX19 golf clubs which were donated by 1986 alum Chuck Kepley of Greensboro Tile & Stone. Martin was not only a sponsor but also a donor of many other door prizes as well as the North Face jacket that was raffled. The third raffle, a Heritage Classic wristwatch by Wittnauer, (donated by Steve Wilmot ’83) was won by the Guilford College Director of Planned Giving, Lee Taylor.
We hope even more alumni will come to next year’s Harvey Ljung and Quaker Club Golf Tournament, held the Friday of Homecoming weekend.
Quaker Club Members Asked to Lend a Hand to Basketball Teams
Both the men's and women's basketball teams will be practicing during parts of Guilford College's winter break. Since Sodexho does not provide food during this period, Tom Palombo is asking everyone to consider hosting either the men or the women for a dinner during this time. This is a chance to meet the team and to give back to Guilford athletics. If you are interested, please contact Jill Hayes at jhayes2@guilford.edu
Quaker Club funds purchase new cheerleading uniforms
This fall, the Quaker Club received a generous anonymous donation and had to decide where to direct the money. With the golf tournament approaching, half the money was allocated to that event to help cover costs. The other half was given to the Guilford College cheerleaders for the purpose of buying new uniforms.

Quaker Club
The Quaker Club was established by Herb Appenzeller in 1956 to promote, encourage and support Guilford College's 16 athletic teams. The money donated by the club's members supplements the athletic budget by underwriting programs, helping to buy equipment and other various needs teams may have. One of the biggest accomplishments by the Quaker Club was the Super Sponsor Program in 1978 which raised funds to build the Ragan-Brown Field House, which is still in use today. Click here to join the Quaker Club
Guilford is an NCAA Division III member that competes in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference. The Quaker Club has recently had a membership base of over 300. While this membership number is great, we know we can be bigger and better. We are always looking for more boosters so whether you are a Guilford alumnus or a friend of the program, please consider becoming a member of the Quaker Club. For more information about gift-in-kind, matching gifts, estate planning or stock gifts contact the Guilford Athletic Department at (336) 316-2190.
The Quaker Club is reorganizing into an organization where donors can designate a portion of their gift to a particular sport. Since May, a group of volunteers have met to create, design and organize a new booster club for Guilford College athletics.
The Quaker Club has announced several projects that will be funded from Quaker Club donations. The baseball field will undergo a face-lift that will include the leveling of the outfield. According to head coach Nick Black, “The playing surface is being improved by leveling the transition from the infield into the outfield where there has been a pronounced drop off. It will not only improve drainage from the infield, but also make the field safer. Fill dirt will be added in the outfield to create a gradual slope from the infield to the outfield, infield conditioner will be added to the skinned part of the infield to improve drainage and playability. Also lips along the inside of the infield will be removed.”
The softball field will feature dugouts on the home and visitor side of the field. A 10-foot press box will be attached to the home dugout.
A new recruiting software program will be purchased and used by the coaching staff to better organize and communicate with prospective student athletes.
For more information contact Tom Palombo, Director of the Quaker Club at (336) 316-2290.
