2006 Cross Country Preseason Poll
- GUILFORD TABBED SEVENTH AND EIGHTH IN CROSS COUNTRY POLL
Greensboro, N.C. (8/29/06) -- Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) cross country coaches chose Guilford College's women's team seventh in the league's preseason poll Tuesday. Guilford's men's team was picked eighth.
Washington and Lee, the defending men's and women's champions, topped both polls. Lynchburg occupied the second position in the men's poll and third for the women. Roanoke was second in the women's poll and third on the men's side.
New head coach Jamie LaFollette welcomes a large class of first-year and transfer students to Guilford, which has more than doubled the size of both rosters. Senior Laurie Henninger earned all-state honors in 2005 by virtue of a ninth-place finish in the Old North State Championships college division. She is the Quakers' top returning female harrier. On the men's side, junior Kevin Smith ranked 10th in last year's state meet and should again contend for all-state laurels.
Both Quakers' squads open their seasons Sept. 2 at the Marlin Invitational, hosted by Virginia Wesleyan. The men's and women's teams will compete against Fayetteville State Sept. 14 at 4:00 p.m. in the first cross country race held on Guilford's campus. The on-campus course is located in The Meadows on the far northwestern end of the college's property.
