Rob Stephens Named Head Men's Tennis Coach At Guilford College

Greensboro, N.C. (8/23/07) -- Guilford College athletic director Marion Kirby announced the appointment of Rob Stephens '73 as the school's head men's tennis coach Thursday. Stephens replaces Bert Poole, who resigned earlier this summer after helping the Quakers to a 9-7 record in his lone season last spring.

Stephens returns to his alma mater with a variety of teaching and coaching experience. He presently conducts clinics and gives private lessons as an assistant pro at the Precision Tennis Academy in Greensboro. He filled a similar position for nine years at the Carolina Tennis Academy in Greensboro where he instructed advanced junior players as well as adults. Stephens also worked the head pro at Triad Tennis Management in Winston-Salem, N.C.

A Greensboro resident, Stephens has five years of collegiate coaching experience. He spent a season assisting John Walton at Elon University in 1997-98 and three years with Jerry Tertzagian at High Point University from 1998-2000. A member of the United States Professional Tennis Registry, Stephens was a volunteer assistant on coach Jeff Zinn's Wake Forest University staff in 2004 and has worked tennis camps at Duke University and the University of Louisville.

Guilford's men's tennis team returns eight students from last year's club, which finished with its most victories since 1998 and reached the eight-team Old Dominion Athletic Conference Tournament. The Quakers will compete in an abbreviated fall schedule before opening the spring campaign in February
