2006 MEN'S TENNIS OUTLOOK

Guilford returned to the courts in 2005 and restored the school's proud tennis tradition, after not fielding a men's tennis team for the previous two years. With only one senior returning from the 2001-02 team and a new head coach in William Fickes, the Quakers scorched their competition finishing the regular-season with an 8-1 mark. Guilford followed up its strong regular-season performance by finishing a school-record third out of a field of 10 teams at the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Championships. Individually at No. 3 singles, Guilford's Caleb Kimbrough (left) claimed the title with a 0-6, 7-5, 6-1 win over Washington and Lee sophomore Jon Malooly.
The Quakers played a limited but successful 2005 fall schedule against Methodist and Division II Pfeiffer, which showed Fickes that his young team appears ready to make a run at top-rated Washington and Lee this spring.
With the departure of Bobby Iordanov '05 (9-5 singles record), the Quakers' sophomores dominate the singles and doubles flights. Sophomores Jose Ortiz and Caleb Kimbrough, high school teammates at Chapel Hill HS, lead the way for the Quakers in the top half of the draw. Ryo Kawai, and Michael Muir round out the returning student-athletes at fourth, and fifth singles respectively. Sophomore Rob Adelberg and junior Will Foppert will battle for the final two singles and doubles positions. The Quakers' doubles pairings should mirror last year's pairings with Kimbrough/Ortiz at first doubles, Muir/Kawai at second doubles, and Aguero teaming with either Adelberg or Foppert at third doubles.
The Quakers open the spring season March 4 versus cross-town rival Greensboro at the Greensboro Day School before beginning their ODAC schedule at Randolph-Macon March 11. Guilford opens its home slate on March 24 looking to avenge its only dual match loss from a year ago to conference-rival Hampden-Sydney.
