GUILFORD THIRD AFTER FIRST DAY OF ODAC MEN'S TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIPS
Lexington, VA (4/16/05) -- Guilford College's men's tennis team sits in third place after the first day of the 2005 Old Dominion Athletic Conference Men's Tennis Championship. Host Washington and Lee and Roanoke share the top spot in the 10-team field entering Sunday's final day.
The
Quakers' Caleb Kimbrough is the lone Guilford player alive in the winners
bracket among singles players. Kimbrough, the number-two seed at third
singles, dispatched of Bridgewater's J.P. Bonilla, 6-2, 6-0, in his first-round
match and edged Roanoke's Brendan Kopf, the sixth seed, 7-6 (7-5), 7-5, in the
semifinals. Kimbrough plays top-seeded Jon Malooly of Washington and Lee
in Sunday's final.
Guilford's second-doubles tandem of Ryo Kawai and Mike Muir upset the fourth-seeded duo from Virginia Wesleyan, 8-4, to reach the winners bracket semifinals. The Guilford freshmen play Washington and Lee's top-seeded pair in Sunday's semifinal round.
Guilford compiled an 8-1 record (5-1 ODAC) in its first year after not fielding
a team for two seasons. The Quakers' best ODAC Tournament finish was a
third-place effort in 1998.
