Men's Tennis Release (2004-05) Kimbrough - POTW - Guilford College

  • GUILFORD'S KIMBROUGH WINS WEEKLY ODAC TENNIS PRIZE

Greensboro, NC (4/11/05) -- Guilford College freshman Caleb Kimbrough received the Old Dominion Athletic Conference's (ODAC) Men's Tennis Player of the Week Award for the week ending April 10, the league announced Monday. Kimbrough is Guilford's first recipient of the prize since the league started offering it in 2003.

Kimbrough won all three matches at third singles in the Quakers' 2-1 week, which extended his streak of consecutive wins to 10. He defeated Hampden-Sydney's Bruce Meyer, 6-3, 6-2, in the Tigers' 5-2 win over Guilford April 4. Kimbrough won 6-2, 6-3, over North Carolina Wesleyan's Dustin Hale April 6 and closed the week with a 6-0, 6-0, triumph versus Virginia Wesleyan's Tom Drabczyk, which helped Guilford secure a 4-3 ODAC triumph over the Marlins. Kimbrough went 1-2 in three first-doubles contests last week, teaming with Jose Aguero for an 8-1 win over North Carolina Wesleyan's top tandem. Kimbrough and Jose Ortiz dropped 8-6 decisions at first doubles against Hampden-Sydney and Virginia Wesleyan.

Kimbrough leads the Quakers with a 10-1 singles record, 5-1 in league contests. He won the third singles flight of the Bud Skeens Memorial Tournament April 2 with wins over opponents from Roanoke and Methodist. He has a 5-5 overall doubles record with Ortiz and is 1-0 at first doubles with Aguero. Kimbrough's 15 overall victories (singles and doubles) lead the team. He also plays basketball at Guilford and averaged 5.3 points per game as the team's starting point guard.

Coach William Fickes' Quakers (8-1, 5-1 ODAC) have matched the program's most wins since the 1998-99 team went 8-7. Guilford reinstated its men's tennis program in the fall of 2004 after a two-year hiatus. The Quakers close the regular season Wednesday (4/13) against visiting Randolph-Macon before competing in the ODAC Tournament April 16-17 at Washington and Lee University in Lexington, VA.
