Men's Soccer Comeback Falls at Washington and Lee, 4-3
LEXINGTON, Va. (9/29/09) -- David Phillips scored his second goal of the match
with 6:18 left in regulation to lift Washington and Lee University
past visiting Guilford College, 4-3, in an Old Dominion Athletic
Conference (ODAC) match Tuesday afternoon.
The Generals (3-2-2, 1-1-1 ODAC) scored the game's first three goals
in the opening 16 minutes for a quick 3-0 lead, which stood until
halftime. James Paldino had a hand in all three tallies with a goal
and two assists.
Guilford (7-4-1, 2-1 ODAC) awoke in the second half and pulled to
within 3-2 on consecutive scores by rookies Freddy Gomez and Ronnie Castellanos less than two minutes
apart. Jordan Alexander's penalty kick in the 82nd minute completed
the comeback and knotted the score at 3-3.
The Quakers outshot the Generals, 15-7, but Washington and Lee
netminder Ben Bartlett made three second-half saves.
Guilford hosts Eastern Mennonite University Saturday (10/3) at 7:00
p.m. in an ODAC match.
