Men's Soccer Team Tops Ferrum, 2-1
GREENSBORO, N.C. (9/16/09) -- Freddy Gomez scored an unassisted
goal from about 20 yards out in the second half to send Guilford College to
a 2-1 win over visiting Ferrum College Wednesday. Gomez' team-leading fifth
tally of the season sent the Quakers (4-2-1) to their fourth win of the
season, matching the team's 2008 win total.
Gomez set up Hugh Griffis' first-half goal that gave the hosts a 1-0
halftime edge. Guilford continued to pepper Ferrum goalie Ben Pittsley with
shots, but could not double the lead.
Ferrum's Billy Rhodes provided the equalizer in the 53rd minute off a Ryan
Cypress assist, but Guilford continued shooting and finally broke the draw
on Gomez blast from 20 yards out.
The Quakers enjoyed a 25-2 edge in shots. Pittsley made seven saves between
the pipes.
Guilford continues a three-match homestand Friday versus Randolph-Macon
College at 7:00 p.m. in the Quakers' Old Dominion Athletic Conference
opener.
