Guilford's Rigert Named ODAC Player of the Week
Greensboro, N.C. (9/10/07) -- A record-setting performance in Guilford College's men's soccer win at Chowan University helped Quakers' junior Joe Rigert capture his first Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Men's Soccer Player of the Week Award. Rigert also received Guilford's Student-Athlete of the Week Award presented by the school's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. The award covers the week of Sept. 3-9. Rigert is Guilford's first recipient of the weekly men's soccer prize since 2004.
A 6-foot, 195-pound forward, Rigert scored five goals and an assist in the Quakers' 2-1 week. He collected a school-record nine points in Guilford's 5-1 road decision over NCAA Division II Chowan Sept. 5. Rigert equaled the school standard with four goals in the match, the most in the school's NCAA Division III history. Rigert added an assist in the match and collected his fifth goal of the week in the first half of Guilford's 2-1 win over Salisbury University Sept. 8. The tally helped the Quakers upend the Seagulls, who entered the match ranked 10th in the National Soccer Coaches' Association of America/adidas South Region Poll.
Rigert's team-leading five goals through five matches, equals his season total in both of his first two years. He leads the Quakers with 11 points and has moved into 10th place on the school's career goals chart with 15.
Coach Jeff Bateson's Quakers (2-3) host Methodist University Tuesday (9.11) in the Quakers' home opener. The contest will be Web cast at http: www.stretchinternet.com.
