GUILFORD'S MEN'S SOCCER SEASON ENDS WITH TIE AT EMORY & HENRY
Emory, VA (10/25/05) -- Guilford's 2005 men's soccer season ended Tuesday
with a 2-2 overtime tie at Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) rival Emory &
Henry. The Quakers (6-7-4, 2-6-1 ODAC) needed a win to tie Lynchburg for the
eighth and final spot in the ODAC Tournament. With a 4-3 win over
Lynchburg last Saturday, Guilford would have held the first tiebreaker with the
Hornets.
Instead, host Emory & Henry (6-10-1, 1-7-1 ODAC)
overcame rainy and cold conditions to secure just their second non-loss in
conference play. James Calvin scored off the bench in the 40th minute to give
the hosts a 1-0 halftime lead.
Guilford tied the game less than two minutes into
halftime on Mike McCaffrey's fifth goal of the season off a Joe Rigert
assist. The Wasps regained the lead on a Garrid Edmond tally in the 66th minute.
Sophomore Greg Haver forced extra time
with team- and career-high eighth goal of the year off an assist from Scott
Meguid.
Guilford enjoyed a 47-18 advantage in shots,
including a 5-4 edge in the two overtime periods. Wasps goalie E.J. Watkins
thwarted the Quakers with a game-high 14 saves. Guilford senior goalie Matt
McCall made a career-high seven stops in his final collegiate contest.
