MAROONS FALTER LATE IN 3-1 LOSS TO GUILFORD
Maroons Fall to 4-5-1, 1-2 in the ODAC, Rose Makes 11 Saves in Loss
SALEM, VA (09/30/04) --For the first time since the 1989 season, the Guilford College men's soccer team defeated Roanoke College, the Quakers scoring a 3-1 victory in Salem, VA on Thursday afternoon. The Quakers, who also get their first ever Old Dominion Athletic Conference victory over the Maroons, improve to 4-3-3 on the season and 1-0-3 in conference play. The Maroons fall to 4-5-1 overall and 1-2 in league action. Guilford also extends its unbeaten streak to six contests.
After a scoreless draw in the first 45 minutes, the Maroons got out to a 1-0 lead on an early second-half goal by junior Elliott Stallings. Stallings received a pass from Eric Eversole and made one move to score the first goal.
From there, however, the match belonged to the Quakers. Eight minutes after Stallings staked the Maroons to the lead, the Quakers tied the score at one. Just moments after moving from his starting defensive spot to an attacking position, Guilford senior Darriel Cannon was able to get behind the Roanoke defense to draw the visitors even at one. Cannon took a long pass from Marcus Bowers and had an easy shot for the goal. Just under three minutes later, the Quakers went up for good on a goal by senior Steffen Schollaert. Much like the Cannon goal, Schollaert was able to get behind the RC defenders after receiving a pass through the middle of the field from Brett Ralls. After one move in the box, Schollaert scored the game-winner.
For good measure, Guilford senior leading scorer Matt Feraci tallied the team's third goal, that with just about 12 minutes to play. The goal was Feraci's 13th of the season. With the goal he set an ODAC record with a goal in his seventh consecutive contest.
Roanoke goalie Austin Rose was busy on Thursday, making 11 saves in the loss. Rose faced 20 Guilford shots in the contest. His Guilford counterpart Zane Campbell stopped five shots, including two consecutive point-blank shots in the second half.
