GUILFORD COLLEGE MEN'S SOCCER PLAYERS LAUDED
Greensboro, NC (11/16/04) -- Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) men's soccer coaches selected four Guilford College men's soccer student-athletes to their 2004 all-league teams Tuesday. Seniors Matt Feraci and Darriel Cannon earned First Team All-ODAC honors. Senior Steffen Schollaert took home second team all-league laurels and classmate Brett Ralls received honorable mention. The league's sports information directors tabbed Ralls as the ODAC's Men's Soccer Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
Feraci,
a forward, became the first Quakers' player to lead the ODAC in scoring with 42
points on a league-high 19 goals and four assists in 19 matches. He ranked 14th
among NCAA Division III goals per match leaders as of Oct. 31 and 19th in
scoring with 2.33 points per match. The two-time ODAC Player of the Week enjoyed
the finest offensive men's soccer campaign in Guilford's Division III history
and had the second-highest season goal total in Quakers' history. He enjoyed six
multi-goal games, including a two-goal, two-assist showing in Guilford's 7-0 win
over Averett. Feraci scored at least one goal in an ODAC-record eight
consecutive matches from Sept. 12 to Oct. 2 and had seven tallies in league
contests. He joined the Quakers this fall after starting his college career at
Division I Coastal Carolina and Appalachian State.
Cannon, Feraci's high school teammate, played a variety of positions in his
20 appearances, but made the all-star team as a midfielder. An ODAC Player of
the Week, he ranked third on the team with seven goals and 14 points, both
career bests, and placed eighth among the loop's goals per match leaders. A 2003
Second Team All-ODAC pick, he scored twice in the Quakers' 6-0 win at Ferrum,
including the match winner. The team captain also netted the decisive tally in
Guilford's 3-1 league triumph at Eastern Mennonite. A four-year starter,
Cannon concludes his career with 11 goals and 24 points in 75 contests.
Schollaert enjoyed his finest season after joining the Quakers from Division I College of Charleston in 2003. The 6-6 forward finished second on the club and fifth in the league with a career-high 17 points. He also set personal standards with six goals and a club-high five assists. He tallied 10 points (4g, 2a) in nine ODAC tilts. Schollaert matched Feraci's team-high six-point total with two goals and two assists in the Quakers' win over league-rival Emory & Henry. Schollaert totalled 33 points on 12 goals and nine assists in 39 Guilford matches.
Ralls earned honorable mention All-ODAC honors for the second time and is the Quakers' second ODAC Men's Soccer Scholar-Athlete in the two-year history of the award. (Ampofo Darko '04 won the initial prize.) A center midfielder, Ralls collected six points on a goal and four assists in his fourth season as a team captain. He received an extra year of eligibility after a leg injury sidelined him six matches into his sophomore year. A dean's list double major in business management and accounting, Ralls received his second straight Second Team CoSIDA Academic All-District III commendation Nov. 4. He graduates in December with 21 career points on six goals and nine assists in 80 matches.
The four players helped Coach Liam Behrens' team to its third straight ODAC Tournament semifinal berth and a 9-7-4 overall record (5-1-3 ODAC). Guilford recorded a top-10 regional ranking and had a seven-match unbeaten streak, its longest since 1986. Behrens expects 17 returning letter winners in 2005.
