GUILFORD SOCCER TEAMS EARN ODAC TOURNAMENT BIDS
Greensboro, NC (11/01/02) -- Guilford's men's and women's soccer teams open play in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Tournament Saturday and begin their quests for the league title and an automatic NCAA playoff berth.
Guilford's men (10-5-2, 5-3-1 ODAC) earned the fourth seed in the eight-team field and host fifth-seeded Bridgewater (11-6, 5-4 ODAC) at 1:00 p.m. at Haworth Field. The contest is the Quakers' first home ODAC Tournament match in school history. The Quakers are assured of their first winning season and best record since the 1986 club went 14-5. Junior forward Tim Imafidon (Raleigh, NC/Wake Forest-Rolesville) leads Guilford with 10 goals and three assists. He scored a career-high three goals in last Saturday's 4-2 ODAC win at Eastern Mennonite. Freshman goaltender Sean Beach (Hylton, VA/Monclair) matched a school record with his seventh shutout of the season Wednesday in Guilford's 2-0 league triumph over Emory & Henry. He ranks among the league leaders with a 1.30 goals against average (GAA) and .823 saves percentage.
The Eagles are enjoying their finest season in school history and making their first ODAC Tournament appearance. Junior forward Jon Williamson (Manassas, VA/Osbourn) paces Bridgewater's scorers with 16 points on seven goals and two assists. Junior goalkeeper Jon Boller (Gettysburg, PA/Gettysburg) has a 1.15 GAA and .854 saves percentage. The Eagles have won four straight matches and five of their last six.
Guilford downed the Eagles, 1-0, in the regular-season meeting October 5 in Bridgewater, VA. Imafidon scored the game-winning goal in the second overtime period. The Quakers lead the season series with Bridgewater, 9-2, and have won the last four matches between the two schools.
The Quakers' women (9-9-2, 4-6-1 ODAC) gained the eighth seed in the eight-team field when Randolph-Macon defeated Randolph-Macon Woman's College, 2-1, Thursday afternoon. Guilford visits top-seeded Roanoke at 11:30 a.m. in Salem, VA. Sophomore forward Kimberly Mullen (Massapequa Park, NY/Massapequa (Nassau C.C.)) leads the league with 55 points (22g, 11a), which ties the Quakers' school record. Senior Alex Hutton (Collierville, TN/Hutchison School) has 13 goals and six assists for a career-high 32 points. Freshman goaltender Danielle Brisotti (Island Park, NY/West Hempstead) shares the school record with seven shutouts and enters the tournament with a 2.22 GAA and .724 saves percentage.
Roanoke (13-4, 9-2 ODAC) earned the tournament's top seed for the first time since 1990. The Maroons placed second at last year's tournament and have won three ODAC titles. Sophomore Jill Hoffmeister (Norfolk, VA/The Rivers School) and freshman Taylor Howe (Winchester, MA/Winchester) have combined for 25 goals and 57 points between them. Roanoke downed the Quakers, 3-1, in Salem, October 8 in the regular-season match between the two clubs. The Maroons are 18-0 versus Guilford in the season series that dates to 1989.
