Jeff Bateson joined Guilford College’s athletics staff in March 2006 as the Quakers’ first full-time head men’s soccer coach. Two Guilford students have combined to win four All-Old Dominion Athletic Conference commendations under Bateson, including 2008 all-region performer Scott Meguid '08.

A 1998 Alma College graduate, Bateson spent two seasons as the head men’s soccer coach at Tri-State University (now Trine University), an NCAA Division III institution in Angola, Ind. Five of his student-athletes garnered honorable mention All-Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) recognition and three were named to the MIAA Academic Honor Roll. Bateson also advised Tri-State’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and taught in the school’s Health, Physical Education and Sport Management department.

Bateson served as his alma mater’s head men’s soccer coach from 2000-2004. Alma went 39-31-7 in his four years and had two all-region honorees. He directed four first-team and seven second-team All-MIAA selections. The Scots enjoyed their finest year under Bateson in 2000 when Alma went 12-6-2 and placed second in the MIAA with an 8-2-2 mark.

An elementary education major, Bateson minored in math and Spanish and spent three years on Alma’s SAAC. On the field he garnered Third Team Umbro/National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Division III All-America honors as a senior midfielder. The Midland, Mich., product helped the Scots to the regional finals in Alma’s first NCAA Tournament appearance and was the MIAA’s Most Valuable Player in 1997.

Upon graduation Bateson parlayed his college success into a professional career and entered the college coaching ranks. He played with the Premier Development League’s Mid-Michigan Bucks (1997-98) and Colorado Comets (1999-00) before devoting himself fully to coaching. Bateson spent 1998 and 1999 assisting his college mentor, Scott Frey, at Alma. The Scots went 30-9-3 with two NCAA Tournament trips in that time and reached the 1999 NCAA Division III semifinals.

Bateson earned his Premier coaching diploma from the NSCAA in 2006 and has worked with the Citadel Futbol Club in Indiana. He currently coaches for the Greensboro Soccer Club. Bateson and his wife, Kristy, reside in Greensboro with their daughters, Halena and Neala.

Assistant Coach Zane CampbellAssistant Coach Zane Campbell

Zane Campbell '08 is in his second year on the Quakers' coaching staff after four years as Guilford's goalkeeper. He earned honorable mention All-ODAC recognition as a senior in 2006. Campbell concluded his 62-match career with the school record for goals against average (1.62) and 262 saves, which ranks third all time.

As a senior, he recorded 83 saves and a .755 saves percentage. He ranked third in the ODAC in saves and second in saves per game (4.82). The Frederick (Md.) High School graduate earned all-tournament honors at the Maryville Nike Kickoff Classic.

Campbell earned his degree in sport studies from Guilford.

Assistant Coach Alan FoyAssistant Coach Alan Foy

Alan Foy joined the Quakers' staff as an assistant in 2009. The Executive Director of the Jamestown (N.C.) Soccer Club, he is oversees the management and operation of the youth program.
Prior to taking the Jamestown position, Foy spent four years as the Director of Operations for the Weston Fury Soccer Club in Florida where he created operational plans, managed staff and coached girls' and boys' teams in the under-15 divisions. Foy also worked as the regional director and staff coach for Major League Soccer Camps, Inc. in Mystic, Conn., where he conducted coaching clinics and coached players from 4-18 years old. He has also served as the head coach for the Ampthill Town F.C., an English semiprofessional team, and the Dunstable Town Ladies in Dunstable, England. Foy played in semiprofessionally for 11 years before moving into coaching.
