Men's Lacrosse Release - Guilford Tabbed Seventh in ODAC Poll (02/07) - Guilford College

  • GUILFORD PICKED SEVENTH IN ODAC MEN'S LACROSSE POLL

Greensboro, NC (02/07/02) -- Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) men's lacrosse coaches picked Guilford seventh in their 2002 preseason poll, the league announced Wednesday. Defending league champion Hampden-Sydney gleaned five first-place votes and earned the top spot, six points ahead of Washington and Lee.

Coach Randy Mercer starts his ninth season on Guilford's sidelines with eight letter winners returning from last season's 5-8 team (0-6 ODAC). The Quakers' roster includes 13 freshmen, which makes this year's club one of the youngest in Mercer's tenure. Sophomore attackman Josh Miller (Princeton, NC/Princeton) is Guilford's top returning scorer after compiling 31 points (16 goals, 15 assists) as a freshman. Two-year starter Nate Goodman (Port Ewen, NY/Kingston) anchors the defense. The graduation of three-year starter Anthony Roman '01 turns the Quakers' goaltending responsibilities over to the freshman tandem of Joe Horvath (Furlong, PA/LaSalle) and Aaron Skiles (Weirton, VA/Shattuck St. Mary's (MN)).

After two home scrimmages with Division II Catawba and Wingate, Guilford opens the 2002 campaign February 23 at Shenandoah. The Quakers' first conference contest is March 23 at Virginia Wesleyan.
