Guilford Falls in OT to Christopher Newport, 12-11

Greensboro, N.C. - Ryan Merrell scored with 33 seconds left in overtime to give visiting Christopher Newport University a 12-11 men's lacrosse win at Guilford College Sunday.  Merrell scored four goals for the Captains, who even their record at 1-1.  The Quakers drop to 0-3.

Neither team led by more than two goals in the tightly played contest, which featured six ties and three lead changes.  Guilford scored the first three goals of the fourth period to gain its first lead since the opening quarter, but Christopher Newport's Patrick Cavanaugh scored from Justin King with 3:10 left and tie the game at 11.  The Quakers killed off a one-minute slashing penalty to Kyle Boylan with 1:37 left overtime four seconds before Merrell tallied the game winner.

Merrell and King both scored four times for the Captains. Cavanaugh added a goal and two assists.  Matt Miller made eight of his 13 saves in the second half and picked up a game-high nine ground balls.

Joe Dauksis' third goal of the game with 4:11 remaining gave the Quakers a brief 11-10 advantage. Nick Martin scored twice for Guilford and Dan Orr added a goal and three assists.  Andrew Vigne made 15 saves in goal and picked up eight ground balls.

Guilford returns to action Saturday (3/8) against Neumann College in a 1:00 p.m. contest to be played in Baltimore, Md.
