Men's Lacrosse Takes 8-5 Win From Oberlin
Greensboro, N.C. (3/25/07) -- Sophomore midfielder Matt Meriwether scored a career-high three goals and an assist in Guilford College's 8-5 nonconference lacrosse victory over visiting Oberlin Sunday in the Armfield Athletic Center. His game-best four points also mark a personal high.
Meriwether's first goal broke a 1-1 tie late in the first quarter and gave Guilford (2-4) the lead for good. Junior attackman Todd Bochenek set up Meriwether's second goal, which ended a 2-0 Oberlin (0-5) spurt and upped the Quakers' lead to 5-3 at halftime. Meriwether assisted on sophomore Gareth Fuller's goal 2:25 into the second half and tallied just under three minutes later to open a 7-3 Guilford lead.
Yeomen rookies Erik Strand and Nick Sherman scored back-to-back goals later in the third period to pull Oberlin within 7-5. Guilford junior Colin Davis closed out the scored with a nifty behind-the-back goal after picking up a loose ball in the crease with 44 seconds left in the third quarter.
Fuller scored twice for Guilford and Bochenek finished with a game-high three assists. Junior defender Tyler Harrison scored the game's first goal, picked up four ground balls and caused two turnovers. Senior captain Andrew Bond made his 2007 debut in goal and tallied six of Guilford's seven saves in over 53 minutes between the pipes.
Senior attackman Bryan Harfenist scored two goals and an assist for Oberlin. Strand contributed two points with a goal and an assist. Junior Drew Zambelliwent the distance in goal, made a game-high 12 saves and picked up a club-best four ground balls.
Guilford returns to action March 31 with a 1:00 p.m. Old Dominion Athletic Conference game at Hampden-Sydney. After a week of practice in South Carolina, Oberlin plays at Vassar April 1 at 1:00 p.m.
