Men's Lacrosse Defeats Christopher Newport, 12-6
Newport News, Va. (4/21/07) -- Visiting Guilford ended a five-game losing streak with a 12-6 nonconference men's lacrosse win at Christopher Newport Saturday. The loss extends tha Captains (4-8) losing skid to eight games.
The Quakers (3-9) jumped out to an early 3-1 lead after the first period of play and both teams found the back of the net twice in the second stanza. Guilford maintained a two-goal lead at halftime, leading 5-3.
The third period proved to be the difference as the Quakers scored three times and held the Captains scoreless to increase their lead to 8-3 after three quarters.
Every time Christopher Newport scored in the fourth to cut into the lead, Guilford responded by scoring a goal of its own, eventually scoring four goals compared to the Captains three in the fourth period.
Todd Bochenek and Dan Orr (above) paced Guilford's offense with two goals and one assist apiece. Colin Davis added three points with a goal and two assists. Marcus Rowe netted two scores, a career high. Andrew Vigne made a season-high 17 saves in goal, seven in the decisive third quarter.
Ryan Merrell led the way for Christopher Newport with three goals and one assist. Nick Cavallaro, Chris Quigley, and Logan Keyser each finished with one goal in the game. Michael Turk finished with one assist.
Christopher Newport outshot Guilford, 40-38. Ray Ralph had 16 saves in goal for the Captains.
Guilford closes out the season Tuesday (4/24) against cross-town rival Greensboro College at 7:00 p.m. at Jamieson Stadium on the campus of Grimsley High School. Christopher Newport returns to action next Friday for the team's final game of the year as they travel to cross-water rival Virginia Wesleyan with face-off set for 7 pm.
