HOPKINS' GOAL LIFTS YORK PAST GUILFORD, 7-6, IN MEN'S LACROSSE
Greensboro, NC (2/28/06) -- Junior attackman Brenden Hopkins converted a pass from Josh Papsan with 2:50 left in the second overtime period to give visiting York (PA) a 7-6 men's lacrosse win over Guilford Tuesday afternoon.
The Quakers (1-2) rallied from a 6-4 deficit in the fourth quarter and forced the extra time on senior midfielder Bryan Borchard's goal with 4:50 left in regulation. Neither team generated many good scoring opportunities before Hopkins' game winner. Guilford killed off a one-minute penalty in the first overtime period.
York jumped out to a 3-0 second-quarter lead on two unassisted goals by Hopkins and an extra-man tally by senior attackman Ben Libertini. The Quakers' got on the board with a Devin Swanson tally midway through the quarter, but the Spartans (1-1) answered with a Paul Rudell score and led 4-2 at halftime.
Two of Todd Bochenek's three goals started the second-half scoring and tied the game at 4-4. Libertini's man-down goal with 2:11 left in the third restored the Spartans' lead, which they doubled on Papsan's unassisted blast from 25 yards out with 8:34 left in regulation.
Hopkins paced the Spartans with three goals. Libertini tallied twice and Papsan and Rudell both had a goal and an assist. Papsan also scooped up a game-high 11 ground balls and won five-of-seven face-offs. Sophomore Matt Keeler went the distance in goal and made nine saves.
Bochenek's three goals paced the Quakers' offense. Sophomore defender Tyler Harrison caused five turnovers and picked up a team-high five ground balls. Sophomore goalie Andrew Vigne also made five pickups in addition to 11 saves.
The Quakers host Cabrini Saturday (3/4) at 1:00 p.m. in a nonconference game. The Spartans conclude their season-opening southern swing at Greensboro College Thursday (3/2).
