WASHINGTON TAKES 19-3 MEN'S LACROSSE DECISION OVER GUILFORD
Greensboro, NC (3/14/06) -- Visiting Washington (MD) College remained perfect through five games with a convincing 19-3 men's lacrosse victory at Guilford Tuesday afternoon. The Shoremen (5-0) are ranked sixth in this week's STX/United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association Division III Coaches' Poll. Guilford falls to 2-4 with its third loss in four games.
Guilford controlled possession for most of the first quarter but found itself trailing, 2-1, after 15 minutes. Washington opened the game up in the second quarter with four goals in a three-minute, six-second span. The Shoremen kept Guilford off the scoreboard until 5:48 remained in the game and freshman attacker Matthew Conrad netted his second goal of the game to end a 16-0 Washington run.
Sophomore attackman Chris Read scored all of his game-high three goals during the decisive spurt. Junior attacker Kevin Nolan led all scorers with five points on two goals and three assists. Senior attackman Sam Lane, senior midfielder Ryan Morrison and junior midfielder Andrew Ostrusky also tallied twice. Thirteen Washington student-athletes found the back of the net in the Shoremen's highest scoring game since 2003. Senior goalie Kevin Thibadeau made four saves in his three quarters of work. Freshman netminder Gordon Cohen finished with two stops in the fourth quarter. Rookie midfielder Thayer Damm won nine of 14 face-offs and picked up a game-high six ground balls. Sophomore defender Connor Gerken caused a game-high five turnovers for the Shoremen.
Conrad's two scores paced the Quakers, who were outshot 51-15. Freshman midfielder Devin Swanson scored Guilford's third goal. Junior Andrew Bond, the second of four Guilford goalies, made 13 saves in just under 34 minutes of work.
The Quakers return to action March 25 against visiting Oberlin at 1:00 p.m.
Washington seeks its sixth straight win Saturday (3/18) against visiting
McDaniel in the Shoremen's Centennial Conference opener.
