WOOSTER HANDLES GUILFORD IN 16-6 MEN'S LACROSSE WIN
Greensboro, NC (3/13/05) -- Junior midfielder Eric McKinney scored four goals and an assist and rookie attackman Conor Hannan added three goals and three assists to help visiting Wooster take a 16-6 men's lacrosse win at Guilford Sunday. The triumph improved the Scots' (2-1) all-time record against Guilford (2-2) to 4-0.
McKinney netted three goals in the first half as Wooster grabbed an 8-2 lead before a late Matt Wagner goal pulled the hosts to within 8-3 at halftime. Hannan and sophomore attackman Chris Vaccaro scored two of their three goals in the opening half. Wooster outshot the Quakers, 26-9, and won seven of 12 face-offs in the first two periods.
Guilford got back into the game in the third quarter with three of the game's next four goals. Freshman attackman Todd Bochenek scored his second goal of the day at the 5:52 mark and classmate Preston Gilbert tickled the twine 36 seconds later to make it a 9-6 game.
Hannan closed the third-quarter scoring with his final tally of the day. The goal triggered a 7-0 game-ending run as the Scots blanked Guilford, 6-0, in the fourth quarter. Junior Austin Taylor scored two of his three goals in the final period.
Junior Alex Morriss and junior goalie Courter Shimeall highlighted Wooster's strong defensive effort with a game-high seven ground balls apiece. Morriss, a long-stick midfielder, scored a man-down goal in the third quarter to take some wind out of the Quakers' comeback. Shimeall made 10 saves in 60 minutes.
Bochenek and Wagner scored twice for Guilford, which was outshot, 51-20. Freshman goalie Andrew Vigne helped the Quakers stay close with 19 saves and four ground balls in 58 minutes.
Guilford returns to action Thursday (3/17) with a nonconference match against visiting Dickinson at 3:00 p.m. The Scots visit Lynchburg Wednesday (3/16) at 4:00 p.m.
