GUILFORD DOWNS OBERLIN, 10-7, IN MEN'S LACROSSE
Greensboro,
NC (3/28/05) -- Greensboro, NC -- Freshman Dan Orr scored a
career-high three goals and classmate Todd Bochenek added two goals and
two assists in Guilford's 10-7 men's lacrosse win over visiting Oberlin Monday.
The teams met on Smith High School's new artificial turf field due to Guilford's
poor field conditions caused by heavy rain.
Orr scored twice as Guilford (3-3) tallied the game's first three goals before Oberlin's Ian Dias got the Yeomen on the board with an unassisted tally with 9:31 left before halftime. Bryan Borchard scored the first of Guilford's four extra-man goals just under three minutes later and teammate Eddie Massello connected with 4:33 left in the first half for a 5-1 Quakers' lead. Will Jaffee's first of three goals closed the first-half scoring and Oberlin's (0-5) deficit at the break to 5-2.
Jaffee set up Bryan Harfenist 1:27 into the third quarter, which drew Oberlin to within 5-3. Matt Wagner and Borchard answered for Guilford, which gave the hosts a 7-3 edge after three quarters.
Guilford received a three-minute extra-man advantage when Andrew Crosby was penalized for using an illegal stick at the start of the fourth quarter. Orr scored a man-up goal from Bochenek 50 seconds into the fourth quarter, but the Quakers could not add to their five-goal lead. Soon after the penalty expired, Jaffee and Dias scored back-to-back tallies and pulled the Yeomen to within 8-5 before the teams traded goals for the rest of the way. Oberlin was whistled for seven penalties in the fourth quarter, which stunted its comeback chances.
Guilford freshman Andrew Vigne made 11 saves and had four ground balls. Senior Drew Wit added a game-high eight pickups and forced two turnovers. Oberlin netminder Jared Pickard made a game-high 13 saves in 59 minutes. In addition to his four points, Jaffee won all six face-offs and had two ground balls. Oberlin enjoyed a 14-6 advantage in face-offs.
Guilford returns to action Saturday (4/2) at nationally ranked Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) rival Hampden-Sydney at 1:00 p.m. The Yeomen visit Neumann Sunday (4/3) at 1:00 p.m.
