Men's Lacrosse Release (2005) - Goucher - Loss - Guilford College

Greensboro, NC (2/19/05) -- Sophomore attackman Dan Flamholz scored four goals and senior goalie Reeves Craig made 13 saves to lead visiting Goucher to a 10-4 men's lacrosse victory over Guilford in both teams' season opener Saturday.

The contest marked the first men's lacrosse meeting in school history between the two schools. Goucher athletic director Geoff Miller coached Guilford's men's lacrosse team to a school-record 63 wins from 1981-87.

After Guilford's Ed Massello staked the Quakers to a 1-0 lead 85 seconds into the match, Goucher eventually got past Guilford's freshman goalie Andrew Vigne, who made 11 of his game-high 20 saves in the first quarter. Junior midfielder Binz Hansen scored Goucher's first goal of the year, which was followed by Flamholz' first tally with 18 seconds left in the quarter. Three more scores in a two-minute, 16-second span lifted the Gophers to a 5-1 edge before Guilford senior Matt Wagner ended the 5-0 Goucher run with the game's lone man-up goal.

Flamholz and Mike Zirrolli each scored twice in a 4-0 Goucher burst that helped the visitors to a 9-2 edge after three quarters. The Gophers' Billy Beaver won 10-of-13 face-offs and Craig made eight saves in the second and third quarters to help Goucher build the lead. Turnovers hampered Guilford all game long, especially the 15 miscues committed in the middle two quarters.

Guilford rookie Todd Bochenek scored two fourth-quarter goals 14 seconds apart off of passes from classmate Preston Gilbert to pull the Quakers within 9-4, but the hosts drew no closer.

Craig, an Inside Lacrosse Preseason All-America pick, led Goucher with seven ground balls and Beaver made six pickups. He won 12 of the game's 17 face-offs. Freshman midfielder Dave Duff scored a goal and an assist for Goucher. The Gophers' man-down unit allowed only one score in six attempts.

Vigne added a game-high eight ground balls in his solid collegiate debut for the Quakers. Freshman midfielder Manny Sargeant added six pickups.

Guilford hosts Manhattanville Friday (2/25) at 3:30 p.m. Goucher hosts Virginia Wesleyan in a nonleague tilt next Saturday (2/26) at 2:00 p.m. in Gopher Stadium.
