COLORADO COLLEGE TAKES 13-6 MEN'S LACROSSE WIN OVER GUILFORD
Greensboro, NC (4/3/05) -- Junior midfielder Jud Brown scored two of his game-high three goals in the decisive second quarter to lead visiting Colorado College to a 13-6 men's lacrosse win over Guilford Sunday in the Armfield Athletic Center. The Tigers (5-4) outscored the Quakers (3-5), 8-0, in the second quarter to highlight a 10-0 Colorado College run.
The game was even for the first 22 minutes before rookie Kevin Cryan triggered a flurry of seven Tigers' goals in the last seven minutes of the second quarter. Colorado College sustained its momentum by winning six-of-eight face-offs in the period and benefited from a Guilford penalty that led to an extra-man goal. Cryan scored twice during the final 6:41 of the second quarter, as did senior midfielder Robin Liston. Colorado College led 9-1 at halftime and went head 10-1 on sophomore midfielder Ted Nash's tally at 10:39 of the third quarter.
Guilford finally recovered to score three straight goals, which made it a 10-4 game late in the third quarter, but Colorado College answered with three scores of its own. Brown netted his third goal, a man-up tally, 31 seconds into the fourth quarter.
Led by junior midfielder Tim Barker's 11 face-off wins and game-high seven ground balls, the Tigers controlled possession, which led to a 38-24 advantage in shots. Eight different student-athletes found the back of the net for Colorado College, including rookie attackman Shawn Maloney and sophomore midfielder Mike Siffri who each contributed a goal and two assists. Sophomore Chris Shopneck made five of the Tigers' seven saves in goal and picked up two ground balls.
Guilford senior attackman Matt Wagner paced the Quakers' offense with three second-half goals. Junior midfielder Bryan Borchard scored twice and rookie attackman Preston Gilbert added a goal and an assist. Senior Drew Wit played well on defense with four caused turnovers and a game-high seven ground balls.
The Quakers return to action Saturday (4/9) against visiting Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) rival Virginia Wesleyan at noon. The Tigers visit the College of Wooster April 22.
