2007 Men's Lacrosse Season Outlook
Guilford looks to bounce back from a 4-10 record in 2006. Six of the Quakers' 10 losses came against teams that were ranked the top 20 at one point during the season. Head Coach Andy Rowe returns 22 letter-winners from last year and looks to lead another young team with 13 newcomers back into contention in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC).
Here’s a preview of the 2007 Quakers’ lineup by position:
ATTACK: Guilford returns Honorable Mention All-ODAC selection Todd Bochenek to quarterback the Quaker offense. The junior was the team’s leading scorer last season. Joining him will be fellow junior Colin Davis and freshman Tyler Zivic. Zivic will be one of many freshmen who will be looked to play a key role for the Quakers this season. Also competing for time will be sophomores Gareth Fuller, Bryan Murphy.
MIDFIELD: The Quakers will look to use their depth this year in the midfield. Guilford will be lead offensively by junior captains Dan Orr and Manny Sargeant. Junior FJ Ientile returns along with sophomores Matt Meriwether and Kevin Thomas. Rounding out Guilford’s midfield rotation are two freshmen: Brock Florence and Josh Osbourne who will be asked to contribute this year.
Sophomore Kyle Boylan moves to long-stick midfield position after starting all but one game at close defense last year. He will rotate time with freshmen Matt Fuquay and senior Alex Penny. Guilford returns senior captain Carl Simon, senior Marcus Rowe and sophomore Jesse Gellerson at short-stick defensive midfield position. Sophomore Dan Simpson will once again be on face-off duties after a strong freshmen year. He will be joined by Simon and Osbourne.
DEFENSE: The defense returns all of its key components from last year including junior captain Tyler Harrison and sophomore captain Gates Benson. Both men started every game for the Quakers last season. Sophomore Warren Brown takes over the third starting spot and juniors Gary Beste and Carl Farlow along with newcomers Andrew Heimsath, Trevor Collin and Grayson Lyles offer quality depth off of the bench.
GOALIE: Junior Andrew Vigne returns after splitting time with senior keeper Andrew Bond last season. Both upperclassmen will be pushed for the starting job by freshman Matt Brewster along with junior Ian MacPhail. Brewster was highly touted out of high school, and was a HS All-American; Guilford’s second HSAA in two years.
Guilford will open their season on February 24 against York College in a rematch of last year’s 2OT thriller, and will once again host Cabrini College, Oberlin College and Kean University this year. The Quakers hit the road to take on Washington & Jefferson, Christopher Newport and inner-city rival Greensboro College to go along with its rigorous ODAC schedule.
