Sanborn Collects Weekly Honors
GREENSBORO, N.C. (2/1/10) -- Guilford College's Tyler Sanborn won the Old Dominion Athletic Conference's (ODAC) Men's Basketball Player of the Week Award Monday. The senior captured the honor for the second time this season and is the second straight Quaker to win the award. Teammate Clay Henson earned last week's prize. Also Monday, Sanborn received Guilford's Student-Athlete of the Week Award for the fourth time this year. The weekly honor is bestowed by the school's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC).
A 6-9, 260-pound center, Sanborn averaged 27.5 points, 15.5 rebounds and 2.0 blocks per game in Guilford’s 2-0 week. He shot 75.9 percent from the floor in the two games, connecting on 22-of-29 field goals. Sanborn hit for a career-high 29 points, 18 rebounds and four blocks, all game highs, in Guilford’s Jan. 27 win at Roanoke College. He made 11-of-15 shots from the floor and had 20 points and 14 boards by halftime. Sanborn had 26 points and 13 rebounds, both game highs, in the Quakers’ road victory over ninth-ranked Randolph-Macon College Jan. 30. The outing marked his league-leading 16th double-double of the season.
A two-time member of the D3hoops.com Team of the Week, Sanborn leads the Quakers in scoring (19.9 ppg.), rebounding (13.7 rpg.), field-goal percentage (.664), blocks (1.79 bpg.) and double-doubles (16). He tops the ODAC in rebounds and field-goal percentage and stands fourth in the loop in scoring. Through games of Jan. 24, he placed third among NCAA Division III rebounds per game leaders and 10th in field-goal percentage. Sanborn (928) needs two rebounds to pass former teammate Ben Strong '07 for seventh place on Guilford's career rebounding list. Sanborn ranks 24th among the Quakers' all-time scoring leaders with 1,121 points.
Coach Tom Palombo's club (18-1, 9-1 ODAC) opens the week ranked second in the D3hoops.com Top 25 Poll. Guilford has won 14 straight games, the third-longest winning streak in school history. The Quakers host Hampden-Sydney College Wednesday (2/3) at 7:00 p.m. in their annual V Foundation Game. Guilford visits league-rival Washington and Lee University Saturday (2/6) at 3:00 p.m.
The Student-Athlete of the Week Award is presented by Guilford's SAAC, which is comprised of representatives from each of the school's 20 varsity teams. The group meets regularly to discuss the state of Guilford Athletics and seeks to build community among the school's student-athletes and non-student-athletes. Recent Guilford SAAC activities include a canned-food drive and the promotion of Champs Life Skills, which promotes intercollegiate athletics as a key part of the campus educational program and the student-athlete as an integral part of the student body. Its aim is to increase student-athletes' community involvement and to engage the greater Guilford community with the athletic department.
