Ben Strong Named Guilford Student-Athlete of the Week
Greensboro, N.C. (12/3/07) -- Senior Ben Strong of the men's basketball team won Guilford College's Student-Athlete of the Week Award Monday. The Quakers' Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) sponsors the weekly prize.
Strong, a 6-11, 220-pound center, averaged 25.0 points, 9.0 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game in the Quakers' 1-1 week. He led all scorers with 28 points and grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds in the Quakers' 71-66 loss at Greensboro College Nov. 29. Strong made 13-of-20 shots from the floor and both free throws in the game. Three days later, he helped Guilford open Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play on a winning note with a game-high 22 points in the Quakers' 101-55 victory at Lynchburg College. Strong made 10-of-12 field goals and added six rebounds, five assists and two blocks in 29 minutes.
Strong, DIII News' 2007-08 NCAA Division III Preseason Player of the Year, leads the ODAC in scoring (26.3 ppg.) and rebounding (11.3 rpg.) through three games. He stands fourth among the league's assists leaders (4.67 apg.) and his .593 field-goal percentage stands seventh in the conference. Strong has two double-doubles on the year and has moved into ninth place on Guilford's career scoring list with 1,573 points.
Head coach Tom Palombo's Quakers (2-1, 1-0 ODAC) are ranked third in the Nov. 28 D3hoops.com Top 25 Poll. Guilford hosts nonconference-rival Methodist University Wednesday night (12/5) at 7:00 p.m. in the Ragan-Brown Field House.
The Student-Athlete of the Week Award is presented by Guilford's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), which is comprised of representatives from each of the school's 16 varsity teams. The group meets regularly to discuss the state of Guilford Athletics and seeks to build community among the school's student-athletes and non-student-athletes. Recent Guilford SAAC activities include canned food drives, assistance with the North Carolina Special Olympics and tutoring at New Garden Friends School.
