Quakers Down Emory & Henry, 122-104
Greensboro, N.C. (2/23/08) - Guilford College scored a season-high 122 points in Saturday's 122-104 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) men's basketball win over visiting Emory & Henry College. Six different Quakers scored in double digits and helped Guilford shoot a season-high 68.1 percent in its final regular-season game.
The triumph extended Guilford's winning streak to 13 games, the Quakers' longest since 1974-75. Ranked 13th in this week's D3hoops.com Top 25 Poll and third in the latest NCAA Division III South region rankings, Guilford improved to 21-4 and set the school record for ODAC wins (16-2). The loss ended Emory & Henry's season with a 7-18 record (3-15 ODAC).
Eric Belkoski (left) and Clay Henson paced the Quakers' scoring with 21 points apiece. Belkoski, one of five Guilford seniors honored before their final home game, matched his career high for points in a game Henson added six rebounds and dished out a game- and career-high eight assists. Reigning ODAC Player of the Week Ben Strong recorded his 18th double-double of the season with 17 points and a game-best 11 boards. Classmate Caleb Kimbrough added 16 points and seven assists. The Quakers made 28-of-38 (73.7%) first-half shots on the way to their best shooting game of the year.
Junior Robert Hudson made seven-of-14 three-pointers and scored game-high 26 points for Emory & Henry. Classmate Camillo Weinz added 23 points off the bench, thanks to seven-for-16 shooting from beyond the arc. The Wasps scored the most points against Guilford this year thanks to 22-of-57 three-point shooting. After falling behind by 25 points early in the second half, Emory & Henry pulled to within 11 points with 9:20 left, but no closer.
Guilford, the top seed for next week's ODAC Tournament in Salem, Va., plays eighth-seeded Eastern Mennonite University Friday (2/29) in the tourney's opening game at 1:00 p.m.
