Guilford Men Ranked Third in D3hoops.com Poll

Greensboro, N.C. (11/27/07) -- Guilford College's men's basketball team climbed into third place in the D3hoops.com Top 25 Poll released Tuesday morning. The Quakers (1-0) received 534 votes and moved up one spot from their preseason ranking following an 87-52 season-opening victory over Villa Julie College Nov. 17. Guilford's national rating is its highest in the school's NCAA Division III history.

Defending national champion Amherst College (2-0) earned 17 first-place votes and 615 points, good enough for first place. The University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point (3-0) stands second with seven first-place votes and 601 points. Augustana (Ill.) College (3-0) and Guilford's Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) rival Virginia Wesleyan College (3-0) round out the top five.

Guilford senior center Ben Strong totaled 29 points, 16 rebounds and eight assists in Guilford's first official game of the season. He leads the ODAC in each of the aforementioned categories through games of Nov. 26. Junior forward George Neville (20 points, 9 rebounds) and sophomore center Tyler Sanborn (14 points, 13 rebounds) also stood out versus Villa Julie.

Coach Tom Palombo's Quakers visit cross-town rival Greensboro College Wednesday night (11/28) at 7:30 in the Pride's Hanes Gymnasium. Guilford needed overtime to win last year's contest, 78-74, in the Greensboro Coliseum. The Quakers have won four straight with Greensboro and lead the all-time series, 26-8. Wednesday's game marks the first in Hanes Gym between the rivals since 1993 and ends a streak of 12 consecutive meetings in the Greensboro Coliseum. Guilford opens ODAC play Dec. 1 at Lynchburg College.
