Guilford (7-2, 2-0 ODAC) hurdled one large obstacle on Wednesday evening in the conference videocast opener, defeating Hampden-Sydney College 93-79. Head coach Tom Palombo’s Quakers must also deal with a talented Randolph-Macon College squad on Saturday afternoon before clashing with VWC. Against H-SC, Ben Strong led Guilford with 34 points on 12-of-22 shooting from the field. He also cashed in 10-of-13 free throws, pulled down seven rebounds and blocked four shots. Clay Henson added 24 points to the effort, connecting on all four of his attempts from beyond the arc on the way to a 9-for-12 shooting day. Swing man Eric Belkowski notched a double-double with 11 points and 12 boards, grabbing seven caroms via the offensive glass.
Virginia Wesleyan (8-2, 2-1 ODAC) tangles with the high-octane style of Emory & Henry College on Saturday before making its Sunday trip to Greensboro. Head coach Dave Macedo’s Marlins are coming off a 76-53 win over Bridgewater College on Wednesday evening. Norman Hassell led three players in double figures with 15 points. Stephen Fields added 12 points and seven rebounds off the bench, and Ton Ton Balenga chipped in 11 markers and four assists. Balenga also came away with three of the Marlins’ 17 steals. D’Juan Tucker paced the defense with four takeaways with Terrell Dixon and Tyler Fantin matched Balenga’s three steals.
The Marlins’ have won the past eight meetings between the two foes. Guilford’s last victory over VWC came on January 9, 2005, in a 74-66 result. Over the past two seasons, Virginia Wesleyan has defeated the Quakers six times (three in each campaign) with last year’s final showdown deciding which school would move on to Salem, Virginia, and the NCAA Division III national finals. The Marlins’ earned that victory by ten points, 81-71, also marking the last time the two squads have met.
