Guilford College Men's Basketball Schedule Announced
Greensboro, N.C. (9/24/07) -- Guilford College men’s basketball coach Tom Palombo announced the schedule for the 2007-2008 season, which includes an exhibition game at the University of South Carolina, a face-off with Villa Julie College and a matchup with neighboring Greensboro College on the Pride's home court.
The Quakers open the season Nov. 5 with an exhibition game at Division I South Carolina. The Gamecocks are coached by former Wake Forest head coach and Guilford alum Dave Odom '65. USC has won two NIT tournament titles in the past three years. The last time these two teams met was the 1917-1918 season, when the Quakers lost, 28-26.
Guilford faces off against Villa Julie Nov. 28 in Ragan-Brown Field House. The Mustangs, who finished 20-8 in 2006-07, made their second straight Division III NCAA Tournament last season before falling to Johns Hopkins in the first round, 84-72. The Quakers, who were in the same NCAA Tournament bracket, knocked Johns Hopkins out in the second round, 80-73, to advance to the Sweet Sixteen. In addition to Villa Julie, Guilford plays fellow 2007 national tournament participants Averett University, Hampden-Sydney College and two-time defending NCAA finalist Virginia Wesleyan College.
Greensboro hosts the heated rivalry between the Quakers and the Pride Nov. 28. Last year’s matchup resulted in the Quakers handing Greensboro a 78-74 overtime loss. The Pride finished 20-7 overall and 9-3 in the USA South Conference a year ago.
Guilford returns three starters from last year’s 24-5 team. With a 15-3 record in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC), the Quakers received their highest seed (2nd) in the ODAC Tournament since joining the league in 1991. Guilford was knocked out of the ODAC Tournament in an upset by seventh-seeded Bridgewater College, but still received a bid to the Division III NCAA Tournament. The Quakers reached the Elite Eight before falling to conference rival Virginia Wesleyan, 81-71. The campaign was Guilford's best showing since the 1974-75 team went 24-4.
