Guilford's Strong Wins Weekly Honors
Greensboro, N.C. (11/21/06) -- The Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) selected Guilford College's Ben Strong as its first Men's Basketball Player of the Week Monday. Strong, a 6-10 junior center, also received Guilford's Student-Athlete of the Week Award, which is sponsored by Guilford's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC).
Strong won his fourth career ODAC Men's Basketball Player of the Week Award after averaging 26.5 points, 9.5 rebounds, and 2.0 blocks in the Quakers' 2-0 weekend at the Jimmy V Classic in Salem, Va. He earned the tournament's Most Valuable Player Award and helped the Quakers to the team title. The ODAC's leading scorer, Strong made 20-of-32 (62.5%) field goals in Guilford's two wins. He matched his career high with 30 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in the Quakers' 91-78 victory over Sewanee Nov. 19. Strong scored 23 points Nov. 18 in Guilford's 101-77 win over Robert Morris-Springfield (Ill.).
Coach Tom Palombo's Quakers (2-0) seek their third straight win Wednesday, Nov. 29 against Greensboro College. The game will be played in the Greensboro Coliseum at 7:00 p.m.
Guilford's SAAC is compromised of representatives from each of the school's 16 varsity teams. The group meets regularly to discuss the state of Guilford Athletics and seeks to build community among student-athletes and non-student-athletes on the campus. Recent Guilford SAAC activities include a canned-food drive to benefit local charities and dodgeball competitions among representatives from Guilford's administration and athletic teams.
