JORDAN SNIPES WINS WEEKLY PLAYER OF THE WEEK AWARDS; GUILFORD MEN'S BASKETBALL TEAM RANKED 20TH IN D3HOOPS.COM TOP 25 POLL
Greensboro, N.C.(1/16/07) -- Guilford College senior Jordan Snipes was named Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Men's Basketball Player of the Week and Guilford's Student-Athlete of the Week Tuesday. He received the award for the first time in his career and joins teammate Ben Strong as the Quakers' second student so honored this year.
Strong and Snipes' play has helped Guilford to its first appearance in the D3hoops.com Top 25 Poll as the Quakers entered the Jan. 15 poll in the 20th position. The poll is chosen by 25 panelists consisting of coaches, sports information directors and media members. The members vote based on the site of the games, the final score, and the opposing team's record.
Snipes, a 6-4, 190-pound shooting guard, tied the school's NCAA Division III scoring record with 41 points in Guilford's 130-114 victory over Emory & Henry Jan. 13. He scored 20 points in the first half to help the Quakers out of an early deficit and take a 66-47 halftime lead. Snipes made 16-of-22 field goals (.727) and shot 9-of-10 from the free-throw line. He also added five rebounds, five assists, a block and two steals in the win. Snipes reached the 20-point mark for the fifth time this season and has led Guilford's scorers six times this year.
One of the leading scorers in the ODAC, Snipes ranks third with 19.5 points per game. He also stands ninth in the league in free-throw percentage (.757), 11th in rebounding (5.9 rpg) and 15th in assists (2.58 apg) and steals (1.33 spg). Snipes ranks second on the team in scoring, rebounding, assists and steals.
Coach Tom Palombo's team is off to its best start an 11-1 start (5-1 ODAC), the school's best since 1967-68. Guilford won its first 10 games, the best start in school history, before falling at defending NCAA Division III national champion Virginia Wesleyan Jan. 7. The Quakers visit Roanoke Wednesday (1/17) to take on the league-rival Maroons.
Guilford's SAAC is comprised of representatives from each of the school's 16 varsity teams. The group meets regularly to discuss the state of Guilford Athletics and seeks to build community among student-athletes and non-student-athletes on the campus. Recent Guilford SAAC activities include a canned-food drive to benefit local charities and dodgeball competitions among representatives from Guilford's administration and athletic teams.
