Guilford Downs Shenandoah, 70-58, to improve to 7-0
Greensboro, N.C. (12/18/06) -- Jordan Snipes scored a game-high 19 points to lead Guilford to a 70-58 nonleague men's basketball win over visiting Shenandoah Monday night. The win moved the Quakers to 7-0, matching the program's best start since 1967. It also marked the 150th men's basketball coaching win for head coach Tom Palombo.
Snipes had 15 of his points in the first half, which helped the hosts to a 37-24 halftime edge. Guilford made 16-of-31 field goals in the first half and held the Hornets (3-4) to 32.3 percent field-goal shooting. The Quakers also forced 12 first-half turnovers, which led to 18 Guilford points.
Shenandoah turned up the defense in the second half, leading to 10 turnovers and 38.7 percent field-goal shooting by Guilford. Lenzie Adams heated up with 12 of his team-high 14 points in the second period. The Hornets trimmed a 15-point deficit early in the second half down to five three times in the final five minutes, but could get no closer.
The Hornets' Mouktar Fawehinmi made a driving layup with 2:23 left, which made the score 61-56, but Ben Strong answered at the other end with a basket from close range. After a Fawehinmi turnover, Caleb Kimbrough drained at three-pointer with 65 seconds left for a 66-56 Quakers' lead.
An ankle injury to Shenandoah's Onyie Onunaku with 5:07 left in the game took some wind out of the Hornets' sails. Onunaku had 10 points, nine rebounds and a steal before leaving the game with the injury.
Strong, the Old Dominion Athletic Conference's leading scorer and rebounder, finished with 12 points, nine rebounds and three blocked shots. Kimbrough added 10 points, four boards and a game-high six assists. Rookie center Tyler Sanborn contributed six points, three rebounds and a career-high four blocks in 12 minutes off the bench.
After Adams' 14 points, Fawehinmi had 12 points and five rebounds. Jeremiah Lawrence tallied 11 points and a game-high 13 rebounds, including seven off the offensive glass.
