Guilford Wins Men's Basketball Season Opener

(11/18/06) -- Ben Strong led four Guilford students in double-figure scoring with 23 points and nine rebounds in the Quakers' 101-77 men's basketball win over Robert Morris-Springfield Saturday. Guilford played its season opener in the first round of the Jimmy V Classic hosted by Roanoke College.

Guilford's Jordan Snipes, who finished with 20 points, scored seven points during a 16-6 Quakers' run over the final 5:41 of the first half that gave the Quakers a 43-32 halftime lead. Tim Hahn's three-pointer brought the Eagles (0-1) within eight points 3:41 into the second half, but Guilford answered with buckets by Strong and Snipes, followed by a Clay Henson three-pointer that restored a 15-point Guilford lead.

Henson finished with 18 points on a perfect shooting night off the bench in his college debut. Classmate Justin Strickland added 12 points and four boards as Guilford's reserves outscored their Eagles' counterparts, 38-22.

Caleb Kimbrough, who scored five points and had three assists, made three steals and helped Guilford convert 21 Robert Morris turnovers into 20 points. The junior point guard also helped limit the Quakers to only 12 miscues leading to seven Eagles' points.

Brian Price led Robert Morris with 24 points and seven rebounds.

Guilford play the University of the South Sunday at 1:00 p.m. in its final game of the tournament
