STRONG NAMED GUILFORD STUDENT-ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Greensboro, NC (2/7/06) -- Ben Strong won the Guilford College Student-Athlete of the Week Award Tuesday. The award is presented by Guilford's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.
Strong,
a 6-10 sophomore center, averaged 16.5 points, 11.5 rebounds and 1.5 blocks in
the Quakers' 2-0 week. He made 11-of-22 (50.0%) field goals and 11-of-13 (84.6%)
free throws. Strong scored a game-high 20 points and 12 rebounds, also a
career high, Saturday (2/4) in a 78-65 win at Bridgewater. The next day, he
posted 13 points, 11 boards and three blocks, all game-highs, in Guilford's
70-66 victory at Eastern Mennonite.
Strong leads the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) in scoring (19.4 ppg) and blocks (2.0 bpg). He ranks fifth in the league in field-goal percentage (.580) and ninth in rebounds (6.4 rpg).
Coach Tom Palombo's Quakers (11-11, 9-6 ODAC) seek their fifth straight road victory Wednesday night at Hampden-Sydney. Guilford's next home game is Saturday (2/11) against Roanoke at 2:00 p.m. in the Ragan-Brown Field House.
Guilford's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) is comprised of representatives from each of the school's 16 varsity teams. The group meets regularly to discuss the state of Guilford Athletics and seeks to build community among student-athletes and non-student-athletes on the campus. Other recent Guilford SAAC activities include a canned-food drive to benefit local charities and dodgeball competitions among representatives from Guilford's teams.
