STRONG WINS SECOND ODAC PLAYER OF THE WEEK HONOR
Greensboro, NC (1/17/06) -- Guilford College sophomore Ben Strong was selected as the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Men's Basketball Player of the Week for the week ending Jan. 15, the league announced Monday. This is the second time this season Strong has received the honor, marking the first time a Guilford student-athlete has won the award twice in a season since the school joined the ODAC in 1991.
Strong,
a 6-10, 220-pound center, averaged 21 points, six rebounds and two blocks with a
.774 field-goal percentage (24-31) in three games last week, helping the Quakers
run off three straight victories to halt a seven-game losing skid. He scored 26
points on 10-of-13 shooting and had six boards Jan. 11 in Guilford's 71-53
victory at Roanoke.
Three days later, Strong posted the first double-double of his collegiate career, contributing 19 points, a personal-best 10 rebounds and three blocks as he shot seven-for-nine from the field in a 77-70 win over Eastern Mennonite. The next day, he again went seven-for-nine from the field, scoring 18 points to go with two rebounds, two blocks and two assists as Guilford downed Bridgewater at home, 72-68.
Strong leads the conference in blocked shots (1.80 per game), ranks second in scoring (19.0 points per game), is third in field-goal percentage (.618) and leads the Quakers in rebounds (5.3 per game). He has led Guilford's scorers in eight of 15 games this season.
Coach Tom Palombo's squad (7-8, 5-3 ODAC) has won three straight games, all of which were against league opponents. The Quakers return to action Wednesday (1/18) when they host Emory & Henry at 7:00 p.m. in the Ragan-Brown Field House.
